Hello,

I have a 2019 Ram 3500 SRW MegaCab. I have several questions, and I hope some of you more experience towers can help.

My existing hitch receiver size if 2-1/2", and I have an adapter, which I "believe" came with the truck. Can someone verify that would be true, that this adapter was an included accessory? The adapter fits into the 2-1/2" receiver then reduces down to a 2" receiver which then accommodates a 2" ball assy.

I've had to use this adapter to downsize the receiver to 2" for our Travel Trailer, and its worked great. Today I received a new Thule Bike rack for the hitch. Knowing I had this adapter, I ordered the Thule Bike rack for the 2" hitch. Now for my issue - I inserted the adapter, then installed the Thule Post, which carries the bikes. There is a plastic knob, which when turned expands a mechanical wedge in the adapter. This works great, except the adapter is still loose inside the 2-1/2" receiver. There is a spring loaded arm on the Thule Post, that does pop into the small hole on the side of the hitch adapter, but this is the only thing really securing the Thule bike rack into the hitch. I wouldn't trust that arm alone to secure the bike rack for a long drive.

I could go to a welder and have them remove the stock 2-1/2" hitch and permanently install a 2" receiver. I'm just not sure I want to do that permanent modification, or if there are any other options?

Any ideas or thoughts from any more experienced folks??

Thanks!
Steve

Yes the adapter (2.5 down to a 2.0) came with the truck, I had one that came with my 2022, I would not cut the factory hitch off, it sounds like the bike mount parts are not fitting like they should be, I would go to a bike shop an see what the think of they way it fits, it could be missing parts, not set up correctly or even the wrong size...

I bought some adhesive backed stainless shim stock and added it to the adapter. Now it fits tight inside the 2 1/2 inch receiver. I had to tap it in.

Do not do that, you will be limiting your ability to tow. Use a different pin if you have to.
