Same setup for me and exact same range I felt there was drone. Wasn’t terrible but after 2 years wore me down and I was sick of it. Still loved the sound of the Carven at idle and especially on acceleration but just couldn’t handle the drone on highway anymore.
That’s why I switched to the borla s type catback. Deeper tone and slightly lower at idle and cruising but more aggressive under full throttle

This is the exact reason why I bought the 1/4 wave resonator. I purchased the one from Mufflex but don’t do that cause it’s not the right length. Just have a muffler shop make it for you.

Looks like this and goes before the muffler.

The concept is you tune the length to the frequency of the drone such that the sound wave travels down the pipe and then back, 1/2 wave out of phase and then cancels out the frequency.

Really? I was going to get this to eliminate the minimal drone that I know others don't like ... according to their site this is made specifically for the Ram 1500s .... do you have pictures of yours and the correct length ?

I had the Competitor series installed for about 18 months and got tired of the Beast mode sound. It did sound great and turned heads all the time but I grew tired of the "drone" in the cab. I get it, if it's to loud your to old, and I own up to that.... I'm to old to have my truck sound like a weekend quarter mile racecar. I pulled it off and went with a model most of y'all don't want to hear about. If any of you want the 5,000 mile Competitor I have sitting in the garage let me know, I'll let it go for a fraction of the original cost.
How much you want?

Theirs is correct for their muffler only as each muffler is going to drone at a different frequency based on its design.

I can measure mine tonight for you when it’s not 107° outside, but you’d be best to download a decibel meter and measure in your truck which frequency is the loudest. I used an app called decibel x.

Sounds like a plan, thanks ... appreciate it .... how much did you pay to get it done at the shop ?

I did it myself.

The mufflex one is too long (deeper frequency drone than the carven) by about 10” or something.

I also have the older design that is slip fit, so I just cut some off of both ends and welded the closed end back on.

I want the borla s type badly but I refuse to pay $1k+ for a metal straw.
I get it. I cried when I did it. I have 0 drone now and I don’t feel as bad cold starting the truck in the early morning. It was cheaper than the exhaust shop wanted to do for basically the same thing though. I was going to do jba headers wrapped and custom x pipe and dual mufflers dumped behind the axle. They wanted 3 grand to do it not including the headers or cats. I would have had to install the headers and drive my truck to their shop with open headers. The catback, headers, and y pipe all together were 3200$ for my current setup. I’m planning on cutting the tips off and turning the exhaust out through the bedsides

My Progressive kit showed up yesterday as well as my son's Competitor and S&B intake for his 2015 Express! I think we may be able to do a side by side comparison video of the Progressive and Competitor Carven's! That should be fun, but first I need to decided if I am going to tackle the install this weekend or farm it out! Kids said they would help so I might give it a go! Stay tuned Ram Fam...this outta be good, LOL!

I just put one on as I saw the sale as well and you are going to love it!! There is not drone except the sound of the muffler as you don't want to lose the sound. To me it sounds perfect.

I seriously think some people have no idea what "drone" sounds like. They confuse the sound of the exhaust with actual drone. Once you have owned an exhaust with drone you won't forget that aggravating sound. I experienced that years back with my first set on Flowmasters I installed on an F-150.

Exactly! To me the sound is not drone but others would bet their wives and the house and say it is ... my wife actually loves the way my truck sounds and being that I do have the 4.88s on it of course I am going to get that continuous sound careening down the highway lol .. I love it!

I used to have a 91 hatchback civic with 5Zigen dual exhaust and "that" system had some drone lol ... they ended up doing a jpipe on it and the drone was gone, so I know what real drone sounds like ...

These trucks just sound B@D@$$ with most direct fit exhausts .... dont fear the DRONE ! LOL

haha fellow Honda guy, had an s2000 with many exhausts including the j’s racing 70rr and Invidia drone monster.

I think that car is the reason I knew of the drone in the ram.

the worst droning vehicle i have ever driven was a Nissan titan v8 with a magnaflow 14" round muffler exiting before the rear wheel. the resonance really fills the cab! not agreeable at all. headache factory on the highway

sounded good from the outside though

Well, it was a bit of a fight! We had to cut off all 3 old clamps and wrestle the tail pipes out of the muffler like a dentist pulling a stubborn tooth! But once that was over, the old muffler slid right out and the new Carven took it's rightful place! It was a bit of a struggle getting the tail pipes to line up and I think the right side is still in a little too far but I'll be adding the dual wall stainless 5" tips soon! The only problem is a couple tiny leaks at the new clamps but I think they will seal up as I run it...I'm going to re-torque them in a week.

Now on to the good part! The sound is amazing! It is exactly what I wanted! It really cracks at cold start and then proceeds to idle down to a low, deep rumble. Pull out on the road and mash the pedal and it sounded like the green flag at Daytona! When I let off, it would again die down to a nice, deep rumble and when the ECO mode kicks in, the sound was almost quieter than the factory exhaust! It does bubble a little bit when in ECO and you feather the pedal a little to speed up or what ever, but it is not bad at all...kinda reminds me of the Huey ride I had at Ft. Indian Town Gap years ago! On the highway, I didn't notice any drone at all! It actually gets really quite until you get on it again! It simple sounds awesome!!

So yeah, I would defiantly recommend the Carven Progressive to any of us old heads out there that want some noise but only WHEN we want it! LOL! Progressive is perfect! I'll post a review of the Competitor once we get it installed on my son's 2015! That should be fun but I hope it doesn't make me regret not buying a Competitor myself, Haha!

Here are a couple short videos...uploaded to my server instead of the whole Youtube thing...

my exact setup, crew cab 8spd 3.92.
I agree was moderate / minimal, I lived with it for 70k miles. But once i did the resonator it was night and day better. OP you won't be disappointed.

I remember the smile I had on first start up with the muffler from stock.
DITTO on this and resonators to soften a lil.

Drone vs sound - Maybe this might help explain it. Your in your living room with your $400 basic 100w sound system - Playing some "whiskey Blues" Volume up. Quality of the "sound" is POOR. You puchase a better 400W "sound" system. Has capability of much more volume - SOUND! However when you turn it up past half way you can hear the windows rattle, lamps are shaking on the end tables etc. -DRONE!!!! it is not the volume you dislike but the effect it has on the room you are in. Drone is like the back ground noise (hum) that is caused by the SOUND. sound is a vibration. That vibration can affect things in the Cab that will also make a SOUND, but that sound can become an irritating noise (or drone). If your real old like me you would remember radios that had a "reverb" buttom. A purposly made DRONE sound.
So what you heard was QUALITY - to you- SOUND. If you had any DRONE, you would NOT have explained it the way you did. Everyone likes "Stuff" but everyone doesn't like the same "stuff". Whiskey Blues for me Italian opera for some.
