I read they changed HD truck rear axle from torsen all gear anti-spin to a cheaper, typical clutch pack limited slip. OP has a model year 2022. I read that in these forums somewhere. True? Did they just slap a Dana axle in there in place of the rugged AAM axle?

Gen IV HD like my model year 2017 truck (Ram 2500) does indeed have the AAM rear axle with torsen all-gear 'anti-spin' differential, tradename "Trac-Rite".

When was this change?
I had a '99 and it's LSD had clutch packs and then I had an '03 and same thing.

I recall it being a cost reduction with Gen V.
The guys here discussed it some years back. There was much discontent.

FYI, the Ram Rebel (1500) has the 2wd/4lock/4low with no auto 4wd. It has the same transfer case as the 2500 series. The Rebel is a 1500/2500 cross breed :)

That statement is incorrect. The transfer case is not the same. It shares the same functionality yes but is nowhere near the same. The 1500 series offer a part time 4wd (bw44-45) and an auto 4wd transfer case (bw44-44) which are both available in the rebel depending on your options. The 2500 only has a part time 4wd tcase (bw44-46 for gas bw44-47 for diesel) of a different model than the 1500. Well at least for the 4th gens that’s the models. Not sure on 5th gens

I have the 2500 series. My transfer case is Borg Warner BW44-46, sticker on the side of the case. 4hi, 4lo, 2w, n. That's it.

It is the old timey BW chain drive used for decades. There are no clutches. There is only electronic solenoid engagement. No more stick shifter. That is it. Takes ATF, factory filled with it. Does not need Mopar magic oil as per manual ( for the -47 WITH clutches).

Model year 2017. I researched it when I changed driveline oils.

Correct. It’s the 46. My bad. Not sure where I saw 47.

Ok....fine, I'm wrong. Not the first time that's happened...although I usually do my homework before sticking my foot in my mouth :) I thought I read something back when I bought it, but you are correct. However, as far as I know, the 44-44 was not a Rebel option back in 2016. The Rebel only had the 44-45. I wonder what the difference is between the 44-45 and 44-46? Just curious.

And interesting that Hemimann mentioned the fluid in the 44-46 as ATF. I noticed that my 44-45 factory fluid was RED.....same as my old 98 Jeep Wrangler. Standard ATF fluid (although I did use the pricey Mopar fluid when I changed my Rebel TC at 53k miles, since I'm still in warranty).

I'm still in warranty also. I don't give a rip about their scam. I put in ATF. Nothing's gonna break. They've literally made millions of these cases and put them on all truck brands.

Same holds for the 8hp transmission and their magic mouse milk. It's bad enough the Germans made it very difficult to service, to force more owners to the dealer. I wouldn't give them any more money for a ridiculous special oil. Owners report good performance with Amsoil ATF. Red Line slips too much.

*end rant*

Don't quote me on this,but i thought i remember reading where the 5th Gen 1500's use a differant t-case then either the 44-44 or 44-45 Khris. I'm not sure where i read it though,or if it's even true,and i don't remember the t-cases number,as i wasn't looking at buying a 5th Gen,so i just glanced at the article.

I agree with you 100%, especially on the transmission fluid. I've used Valvoline Maxlife in dozens of cars....Ford, Dodge, Toyota, etc and never had a problem. Maxlife now says it is spec'd for the ZF 8hp.

I did use Redline ATF6 in my former Toyota FJ Cruiser....but after 10k miles I wasn't happy with it's performance...just felt funny. I purged the Redline out and Maxlife in......shifted smooth as butter.
