Hello needing some guidance on my transmission issues. long read

2012 4.7 4x4 180000. Driving the other night felt a few bumps/shudders while coasting down hill. Under power no issues. Does this on and off a few times get to store truck sits 30min or so. Leave going down hill 2 bumps/shudder then hit red line starting up the next hill. Get pulled off the road no forward reverse no codes trans temp around 155-160. Fuild level is good little dirty but not burnt get it loaded on buddies trailer.

Pick it up from buddies house 2 days later on the trailer. Get home fire the truck up it goes into reverse and backs off trailer no problem. Drove down the driveway and street maybe 1/4 mile transmission misses upshift and stops pulling manually shift into 3rd drives like normal. Get turned around upshifts fine tries to downshift and clangs into gear chirps the tires and speedo hits zero. Then drives home fine. Still no codes.

What or where to start checking on the trans?

Thanks

I would start by doing a trans. fluid and filter change.

The choice usually comes down to this, do I invest in the brains of a tranny or do the clutches at the same time. Clutches you drop the tranny = total rebuild. Valve Body is easy dyi, change solenoid pack and do filters and metal thread upgrade, it is a 6 speed? Sounds like a brain issue to me, which means swap old VB likely needed anyhow, and the SP. make sure you use the correct solenoid pack and valve body if you opt for this. I think VB comes off with a 25 torx bit. do your own research...

The oem mopar sump filter is great, I'd get only mopar. The oem canister filter is junk, even if you do chose to run it, get the metal thread upgrade, but you can also look at the rfe filter options thread if you want to run a better canister filter. Ram forum has lost rfe's from the plastic thread, cheap fix here, I get mine from ebay, look for hex top those are best fit

So fluid and filter change tonight some metal speks in the pan. Checked the level and drive it down the road. Got about 1/4 mile and the truck hit red line and slammed back into gear and locked up the rear tires again. Got it pulled over and no forward or reverse again. Started pulling the truck back to house backwards in neutral. Bout halfway home the truck started bucking like it was in gear but in neutral. Then drove home under its own power.

Last night when it was driving had a strange whine and tonight it almost feels like the truck is in low range when in gear

Used trans with 72k miles on ordered from lkq. Besides new filters and fluid anything else I should do to help insure reliability.

The weakness is the rfe is mainly the valve body, all the pistons and a rebuild kit, plus a leaky seal. I doubt you want a plate upgrade which often comes with grinding a valve body flat, but that is a lifetime fix. The option is a gasket, which helps a leaky valve body. Best bet is just to order a valve body with the weaknesses fixed, and a new solenoid. You can tune for pressure, for that you will want a valve body with upgraded plate, this sends fluid into transmission and is great for longevity, but that isnt a cheap fix, costs go up with a tune and a plate by about double. What is your pleasure to spend? It is a crap shoot if the 72k mile rfe has great clutches or not, which is why every owner has to make those choices, because at a tranny shop nothing you do will you get credit for, no shop is gonna rebuild the tranny and use an old valve body and give you a warranty. It always comes down to this choice, the non brains in the transmission is the crap shoot, the valve body in oem is just junky and weak. You might want to install transmision as is, wait, see if it is generally working good, then put a new VB and solenoid in with filter upgrade and fluid. It is an easy dyi job, whereas replacing the transmission isnt. Worst case when adding a VB you need a flash, but it is hit and miss, many guys do it w/o a flash or quicklearn.

So had the lqk transmission installed truck is doing the same thing. Mechanic says the transfer case is locked in low and won't go to high or 2wd. Anything to look for before tracking down a t case

New to me transfer case in truck runs and drives a few hickups with shifts. Do I need to have a shop do the quick learn with putting in a lower mile transmission?
