As promised, here's the pics of my Autotecnica CY1214647PRM aluminum pan that I ordered a week or so back through RockAuto for $85.79. It looks pretty decent, but I'm a bit nervous that the only magnet it has is what's on the drain plug. I disassembled the filter for the betterment of the forum as well. LOL.

I forgot to add the gasket looks and feels really nice on this pan. There is a groove cast around the full perimeter that a lip on the gasket pushes into, so the gasket stays nice and secure.

Still not sure what to think about the magnet situation and I don't know that I'm thrilled with the cellulose (looking) filter element.

It's going to be a couple months before I get beyond 60K miles and do this job, but I'll post some pics of the fluid for sure.

I still don't know if I'm thrilled with this pan because of the filter and magnet situation, but I've read of plenty of ZF8 owners who have used aftermarket pans without issue, including the under $30 cheapy kits you can get online.

The slightest fitment issues or fluid seepage and it's out.

I had success with a $30 ebay pan but had to swap out the gasket for OEM. If you dont want to risk it they are pretty cheap and a lot easier to replace before you put the pan on.

How much are the replacement filters for the pan you purchased?

Rather than trying to piecemeal, and cut corners, just use the replacement so you can get through Summit, or Mopar.
As far as the oil I would recommend Amsoil, as they are the only oil producer that steps up to the plate and states that they meet or exceed Mopar specifications.

Good point made here.
I found a Mopar pan / filter assembly made by Filtran here in the USA ( I will not buy anything Made in China, just a personal choice) Price for pan / filter assembly was $117.00 It came with the gasket installed and has the four magnets in place. It does not have a drain plug. It is a solid pan on the bottom. When the day comes to replace it I will carefully drill a hole in the area where the drain plug would be to drain the fluid. By that time who knows what will be available and what I might choose for a replacement. It is the latest superseded to part number. They seem to like to keep changing things just to keep us confused I guess. Just to be sure I also found replacement pan bolts for something like $1.17 each. They are metric #6 X 28.5, grade 8.8 which is equivalent to a SAE grade 5 bolt. There is nothing magical about them. I don't see why they could not be re used if installed and torqued properly. I also purchased 7 quarts of ZF 8 speed transmission fluid at $17.00 a quart. None of the parts were REAL inexpensive but by taking the time to research and look around I think the prices I paid are noticeably less than what we see those items generally advertised for.
Four thousand miles to go before I do the service.
Edit: Forgot to mention. The gasket fits very securely in a groove made in the pan. I imagine it is like POMAN mentioned on the aluminum pan. It fit so well that at first I did not think there was a gasket on the pan as the black gasket matches the black pan. It was actually rather difficult to get under it and pull a short area away from the pan.

@Different Drummer I thought I had read some time back that the OEM pans were made by Filtran. Might be the case for the 8HP45 that are built in the States for Pentastar powered vehicles, even though the 45 and 70 share the exact same pan.

Odd that the aftermarket version doesn't come with a drain plug, but the drain plug is a messy proposition with Hemi powered Rams with the exhaust cross-over pipe right beneath it anyway.

Some of the parts I purchased came from a place that deals in diesel related products only. I did purchase a gasket from them because when I placed the order with someone else for the pan they told me that it did not come with a gasket. This was in spite of the fact that it was listed as a kit and appeared to have the gasket in the kit. When the pan arrived it did in fact have the gasket installed but I had already ordered the gasket from the diesel supply place. The gasket I ordered separate is identical to the one that came on the pan. Looks like I will not have a shortage of gaskets at least for a while! LOL The bolts came from the same place where I purchased the gasket. They are identical to the bolts that are in my transmission as it came from the factory. Unless there is a difference in the capacity of the pan I can see no difference between the pan / filter, bolts and gasket between the Hemi, the diesel and the Pentastar.

I read your post about the aluminum transmission pan and checked into that pan. The pan's filter looks like the typical media that lets the contaminant particles settle in the pan and not get picked again. The Rock auto website showed the pan to be in stock so I put in my cart. It was suddenly out of stock. Seems like a lot of people my be using these metal pans. The pan can be found other places but the price is well over $125. Closed the Rock auto website and during another search with that part number, ended up back on the Rock auto website. The pan was still in stock so I placed in the cart. Now the price was just over $102. Still not bad but the %16 inflation must have hit during my search. Amazon has 7 quarts of Life Guard fluid for $131. Still ends up about $250 for an oil change but once every 10 years (100K miles) is not bad.

Just for the record ZF reconmends a service on their 8 speeds between 80,000kms and 130,000kms (50,000 miles to roughly 80,000 miles) or every 8 years which ever comes first.

Yep, when I bought mine for ~$85 from RA, it said "limited stock". I doubt these are a high volume item. I'd guess the current climate is causing supply issues instead.

I plan on using Valvoline Maxlife AFT, so this will be more like a ~$125 pan and fluid change for me.

Like said, I've read of quite a few guys using a $30 replacement pan kit for their ZF8 and maxlife fluid, so you can conceivably do a pan/fluid change for around $60.

Based on what I've read, if you talk with ZF, they recommend you do the first pan/fluid change at 60K miles.

The OE pan on my '15:

Filtran, made in USA

OE pan from RockAuto, bought Dec. 2020:

I most likely will look at an aluminum pan for mine. Leery of hitting debris in the road, especially in the middle of BFE if I am traveling.

I tried the autotecnica pan out in my 16 Rebel, but had a horrible experience that ended causing a wasted weekend, the purchase of a $120 scan tool, and 7 qts of wasted fluid.

I installed the new pan and during the filling/level change process, the truck gave a service transmission message with blinking D on the rotary gear selector. After hours of troubleshooting, I was able to determine that the aftermarket pan was prohibiting the gear selector from reaching park, while throwing a code.

I started removing the pan and I heard an Audible click as the selector finally found park. I ended up installing the old pan with 7 more qts of fluid.

I was enthusiastic going in to this job, but extremely frustrated afterwards.

Going forward, I will try the Dorman pan, which is plastic, but has replaceable filters.

Digging up an old post here, but someone else dug it up first. Anyway, the pans are essentially the same. I installed a 45 pan on my 70. But, the gaskets are different. There is an alignment pin molded into the gasket which is in a different location on the 45 vs 70. Only found that out when I had to replace the gasket on the cheapy pan I bought, which was a 45 pan, and the OEM gasket for the 70 had the pin in a different location. I cut it off and all has been fine, but there is a tiny difference.

Shawn, thanks for the info. You would be the second one reporting this issue with the aluminum autotecnica pan, unless I'm confusing you with the first guy who posted about it.

That sucks. It's a $85 paper weight..
