Exhaust manifold bolt, probably a back one,as it has the stud for the heat shieldFound this in the driveway under my truck. Looks like a super clean break and very new. Anybody happen to know offhand what it is?
that is the first thing that came to mind when I seen it.Exhaust manifold bolt probably a back one as it has the stud for the heat shield
ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, arghThat one looks like it's broken flush with the cylinder head. Time to break out the welder.
OP, make sure you report back if that is what the bolt went to, always nice to know when Internet Guessnosis works, LOL. Pic be nice also, but not a back breaker. Thanks man!
Oh there is not doubt about it .... that is definitely a manifold bold lol ..OP, make sure you report back if that is what the bolt went to, always nice to know when Internet Guessnosis works, LOL. Pic be nice also, but not a back breaker.
Is nobody concerned that bolts are just popping out of his engine? I know cranking on them can shear them, but I've never heard of spontaneous failure.

I do agree with the expansion and contractions of the metal but every engine on the planet does that and it only seems to be a big issue with ram and gm trucks. I've been a mechanic for 30 years and counting and I haven't seen a broken bolt issue on any engine other than the Hemi and gm LS. I get bolts can break when trying to remove them but randomly popping off like this I've never seen lolExhaust manifolds break that's a given with any engine no way around it Gm 4.8-5.3-6.0 are bad at it to the heating and cooling cycles them bolts and manifolds go through. Heat causes metal to expand then contracts when it cools there is only so many times bolts can do this before they break
Manifold bolt and manifold breakage has been an issue for as long as i can remember. My dad had a side business back in the 60's/70's brazing up and repairing broken Ford manifoldsI do agree with the expansion and contractions of the metal but every engine on the planet does that and it only seems to be a big issue with ram and gm trucks. My previous truck was a Chevy 2500HD with the 6.0L gas. Replaced several manifold bolts on it and a very common problem as said above. I know a long time GM dealership mechanic and he does at least several a month.Exhaust manifolds break that's a given with any engine no way around it Gm 4.8-5.3-6.0 are bad at it to the heating and cooling cycles them bolts and manifolds go through.
