@Wild one I saw that. His collection of HEMI tick-related videos are the absolute best for anyone looking to learn about the underlying issues, and it's really neat to watch him slowly come to pinpoint the most probable culprit, and then go on to provide a pretty neat fix (the Hellcat pump, or the other one for pre-2009 HEMIs). Not that it's an easy or cheap modification, and probably outside of my grasp for the time being. I just keep repeating "it's only 5%" to myself every few months and stay on those oil changes!

Finally got around to watching this - someone re-posted it recently. An excellent video.

I was not aware FCA changed to a higher volume oil pump for 2010 and later model years! If EVIC is to be believed, and I think it is because OBDII readers read the same sensors, my 2017 shows 35 psi @ hot idle, where the video guy showed 20 psi @ hot idle for his pre-2010 model year engine. I'd be concerned about 20 psi even with a non-Hemi engine!

So FCA clearly understood inadequate lubrication was an issue for Hemi lifter and cam failures. But - this is the important point - lifters and cams still failed post-2009 model year Hemi engines! We don't know the rates of failures for comparison - FCA surely does.

It's also instructive FCA installed a higher volume oil pump into the Hellcat Hemi. I'm unaware of oil pump volume upgrades as a rule for non-Hemi engines used to race. This also speaks to how inadequate the oiling is for Hemi Gen III engines.

Most of my other engines run 30-35 psi hot idle, which is fine for a non-Hemi engine. The fact that Hemi's still fail after 2009 (adding VVT raised the valve oil drainback angle for poorer lubrication), swapping to a Hellcat oil pump should surely help. But the final surprise was how involved getting to the oil pump is on a Hemi. It's too much for me in my 60's. Guess I'll just stick with the Red Line Oil & low restriction filter strategy and pretend it's all good.

Thanks for your info, @Wild one

Many engines idle at 5-10 psi.
High pressure was never desired on the older engines - no reason for 100 psi on the oiling system.

Great video. Unless I missed it he never said what oil weight he was using..

My 14 supercharged 5.7 hemi, is 65 psi cold start. Runs 53 at speed, holds 48 at idle, 190 engine temp, 212 oil temp.

Idle is set at 750 warm, 1000 cold start.

I'm 5w30 Redline and RP filter.

Would not mind some higher pressure but. Not real concerned about current.

Having a high volume oil pump does not always mean your going to have higher oil pressure...
That is very true, on the big blocks running a high volume pump was pretty standard.
That was what I was expecting on the video, really wasn't expecting the Melling pump to be a 100 psi pump. I didn't get to see the whole video yet as to what the Hellcat pump did.

I'm also seeing 60 degree numbers cold and low 50's hot idle. Engine temps are normally 185 coolant and 195-205 engine oil. This is on a stock pump and engine running Amsoil 5w-30

The highest I have ever seen in my truck was 62lbs cold and it idles no lower than 48lbs on a hot summer day. I imagine the older the oil gets, the lower the lbs. due to thinning out a bit....

Best regards,

I've never seen an automotive engine with idle oil pressure of 5-10 psi. We used Ford & GM engines at work. GM was considered low @ 15-20 psi and of concern to our most experienced automotive engineers.
Many was an overstatement haha
I should have said there are engines that the low oil pressure light isn't turned on until 5-10 psi or lower.

However a 5.9 magnum has a min. oil pressure of 6 psi per the manual, the 2.5 is 13 psi, 3.9 L is 6 psi , 4.7L is 4 psi all at hot idle.

When running PUP 5w20 stock 2012 I saw 27psi hot idle. Changed to redline 5w30 saw 32 hot idle. So 5psi difference. Doubt any less/more oil as far as parts seem but no doubt better additives running the latter.
