I have an extended bumper-to-bumper warranty on my 2017 Rebel (5.7L, 4x4) that is going to run out in about 6 months. I have about 88K on the clock right now and no noticeable issue except I think the driver side mirror heating element is not working so I will be taking it in soon for that as it is self dimming mirror so the $100 deductible is worth it to have it replaced. Anyway, what else should I have the stealership check? I know lifter/cam issues is a concern, but not sure of how that can be checked without tearing about the engine and I'm not wanting to spend $700 for a diagnostic if it wont be covered under warranty. My warranty will cover everything except wearable components like brakes, wipers, etc. Control arm bushings and ball joints ARE covered though.

So, anything specific to have them check (minuscule common leaks, common failure points, things that don't scream BAD!!! but are still failing, etc.). Are there other ways to test for cam/lifter issues before they actual bite the big one? I do have some tick that remains after start, and I have already had the broken manifold bolts replaced once at the cost of $500 at the dealership because those weren't covered (yeah, really odd they didn't cover that). If those go again, I will be adding headers and ARP studs myself.

Good luck finding a dealer that will give you just a "check" for warranty items. You may be able to pay them for a detailed inspection which may be worth it to you. One thing to take a close look at is your radio for any bubbles in the glass, more common on the 2018 radios but delamination can happen.

I don't mind paying for a comprehensive test. But I want to make sure they are checking the right things and not just a visual test. I am mechanically inclined enough to tear the engine down and rebuild it myself, but would rather have it done while under warranty.

Check your wallet...Because that is about to run out also.
Lol. Not likely. I'm not going to pay more for a check than what might be needed for a repair. But, considering an engine or trans is a few grand. I don't mind spending a few hundred bucks to ensure everything is good while it's under warranty.

Does your warranty cover any software updates? Or are you privy to any discounted software updates? Or would the dealer give you a 'deal' on any software updates? Might be worth a discussion with them.

It sounds like you already know have a pretty good idea what the main wear points are. You could ask the dealer mechanic to inspect the truck up/down and around. After they are doing your other work. Offer to pay for a detailed inspection, maybe as far as a fuel pressure test if you want to take it that far. A good dealer mechanic who works on these trucks day in and day out should know the key things to look for and what generally fails when.

Something 'not' to do: Don't lube the door hinge bushings. Chrysler has used (for many yrs) a sort of pressed braided wire/graphite hinge bushing which is self-lubricating. They hold up amazingly well for as small as they are. The Jeep hinges I've lubricated with oil on previous vehicles (a long time ago) seemed to cut their life pretty quick, not add to it. I ended up replaicing the bushings a couple times till I learned to leave them be -- even though you'd think they should be lubed (but don't). LOL.

Also, can your warranty be extended? Or can a powertrain warranty that covers the engine/trans/transfer case/diffs, be added (and how much $$)? Might be worth a conversation with the dealer. Then you can decide if it's worth it to you.

I am going to ask about extension as it gets closer. As long as it's a reasonable price, I will likely extend it, but if they want $2-3K for another year or two. It won't be worth it to me.

Order a test kit from Blackstone and have them analyze your oil. If you’re having lifter issues the oil test will reveal it with elevated iron levels. I’m sure the dealer wouldn’t replace anything based on the results but you’ll have a very good idea about what’s going on inside your engine

I would recommend getting an independent shop to do the inspection then take the list to the dealer. Also if your extended is a Mopar warranty the $100 deductible is per visit not item so get as much done per visit.

Good suggestion on a separate shop. It's not a Mopar warranty, it's actually through VehiclrOne which is now Ally. It was their top of the line that even covers scuffs or damage to rims and if I get scratch in the rim they replace the rim if it can't be repaired.

One thing I would check, as I had this issue on my 2013, but not sure if it still exists on the 2017, is rot inside the driver side front fuel tank strap frame bracket. At least in 2009-2013 there are no weep holes and the moisture build up corrodes the bracket from the inside out until it fails. My tank darn near hit the pavement one day after filling up.

Thanks for the info. The only issue I have had regarding rust (even though it lived in Illinois for years) is rust on the rear bed tie down hooks. You can see it bubbling up between the welded plate and the tie down hook. I will certain check your recommendation though.

This is a recall item. They should check for open recalls anytime it's in the shop.

I'm surprised exhaust manifold bolts weren't covered either under powertrain or emissions. I'm in Nova Scotia ,Canada and although it's a pain every 3 years on a new vehicle and 2 years after we have to get an inspection done . I now a good mechanic and and get one done just before warranty is up . Great for fluid leaks , suspension and stuff like that . Anyway good luck .
