I've had my 2019 Ram 3500 Cummins for a little over 30 months now but I've always been curious about just what is that clicking/ cycling sound I hear every time I shut it down. Please tell me. Thanks.

It's the dpf doing its thing and the def pump purging fluid back into the tank or something technical like that anyway

What you're hearing a few minutes after shutdown is the Body Control Module checking/returning the vent controls before it "goes to sleep". Yes, modules go to sleep so they don't kill your battery until the next time you turn the key on.

Do you have the rear air suspension.
Mine regularly "vents" when the truck is shut down.

It could also be the HVAC System resetting everything back to the Default Positions

Not to steal the thread, but I have the same question concerning my 2020 Laramie 1500, with the 5.7 HEMI. Each shut down, there’s a spinning/venting noise near the truck bed. What is that?

It’s none of the guesses posted here. It is the EGR valve cycling. You can open the hood and watch the cable cycle the EGR valve three times when you hear this noise.

I was just talking to Ram service about this very thing the 2 days ago, I shut the truck off with hood up when I heard clacking & whistle noise for the first time (now wish I had keep phone video with the sound to post here) I was told its all normal its all the electronic stuff on drivers side of engine shutting down, I even started truck up with hood closed at the dealer then shut it off you could hardly hear it, I'm surprised I had not noticed it before when shutting it down at home. Also service person took me to a random used diesel truck on there lot that did the same thing...

I know for a fact the noises I hear after about 4 minutes are the vents in the HVAC. I never noticed any other noises especially from under the hood. The next minute I can I'll check this out.
So how soon after you shut the truck down you're hearing this? Like I said, the noise I spoke of is after 4 or 5 minutes from shutting down, when the modules go to sleep.

The sounds I heard were 10 seconds or so after shut down, I have not been near my truck 4-5 after shut down to know if it makes noise...

Open your door, power down and you’ll hear them. My CTD does it - videos I have watched of other CTD engines do it. Figured it was post-running crap the engine does after shutdown so now I’ll learn something.

I'm not doubting it. Just never heard it. Probably because I shut down with the doors closed & radio playing or talking on the phone through the truck. Then I gather my stuff and exit. From what you guys are saying I would of missed it already before I even opened the door.

It is very possible there are different behaviors of after-engine off noises between model years. My rear air suspension doesn't make a venting sound after shutting down. At ignition on and off I can hear the turbocharger viens cycling (2015 CTD). Later, I hear the HVAC system moving the blend door.

Well nothing but one little half second noise that was it at the initial shutdown. No activating of anything under the hood. I even restarted it and tried again and nothing but one little click that if you blink you'd miss it.
My truck is bone stock 2018 H.O.

Thanks for the laughs. There is no egr cable. It’s controlled by a solenoid. The clicking sounds after engine shut down is the def pump purging the def lines of fluid returning it to the tank.

My mistake. I re-read what I typed, and realized I missed a word in there- it’s the egr BYPASS valve (on the front of the egr cooler, passenger side). There’s two cables that go to the actuator wheel. I can watch that cycle after shutdown…every time, and it makes the clicking noise. I have never heard any noises coming from the direction of the def pump after shutdown.
