I'm looking to do the first oil change on my 2022 2500 6.4L gas. The manual says to use 0W-40 oil. I've been to two local auto parts stores and they don't have it.

Is this stuff usually difficult to find, or is it just a fluke?

Order online. Stores carry less and less inventory now.

Many of us run 5W-30, including me. There's a whole list of reasons why FCA spec'd 0W-40 for the 6.4 Hemi in the truck, none make sense to me. And there are significant disadvantages.

You can read 4,000+ posts in the Synthetic Oil Thread about it.

Amazon...that is where I've gotten mine. Pennzoil ultra platinum. Like hemiman said. 5w-30 works too. I am going redline 5w-30 on my next change.

Yeah I don't know if I would stray too far away from what they call for. It seems like every post I have read on here of guys wiping out their cams they were using Mobil 5W30. Not sure if it was the Mobil or the viscosity. I am sure there are plenty out there that have over a 100k on their trucks with no problems but I wouldn't take the chance. Amazon is the best way to find it. Most stores don't keep it stocked & if they do it costs much more.

"Off-weights" are becoming more scarce on shelves and PUP is hard to find in general (most stores carry PP) as HEMIMANN said.

I used to occasionally get my fluids and filters on-line but now that's the only place I can find them. Sometimes I'll come across a filter to put in the garage until the next change but Amazon is the only place I can find my oil.

Whether or not you use 0w40, just know the info, no harm in that. There are some good reason to use 0w40 PUP, mostly it is out of strict api additive goals of 20-30 weights, so you usually get more protective additives. However, some oils don't use api recommendations on additives, and those offer much more because 0w40 pup is in api, 40 weights just have different additive rules as it is considered heavy duty.

Do a uoa on 5w30 and one on 0w40 if you wish, or just read the 100's we have on the board, depending on the 5w30 you can have a thicker oil towards the middle and end of your interval. 5w30 is much more stable winter rating to weight, known as the swing. PUP 0w40 starts out at 13.7 fresh at operating temp, by mile 4k that oil is in the 11's. You can see hammers 3 uoa's, the viscosity is already in the 11's at 4k miles, and it goes down from there, see bitog. If you run something such as redline 5w30 like hemimann does, it will likely be in the 12's in the same oci. So in other words, it is thicker then 0w40, absolute fact. Dont think 0w40 is "thicker" then 5w30, they have vii's to make it that way and those shear and the viscosity drops much faster then stable 5w30. See the blackstone thread here, look for yourself how thick oils are with lab testing, everything else is just noise, those are facts.

Agreed. My viscosity with PUP 0w-40 was 10.03 I believe with 4,900 ish miles on it.

I find this oil thing "Funny" in a way

It used to be 0W-anything was the only multi viscosity motor oil that you could find in Australia.
Hardly anyone in the USA had even heard of ZERO Winter - anything back in 2015

Zero Winter - SAE Forty weight

I say WHAAAAAT ?

I buy my oil 0W 40 on Amazon, I am a prime member so I get free shipping on everything I buy. I use Mobil 0W 40 in my SRT10 and SRT8 and the last time I purchased on Amazon it was 22.00 for a 5 quarter container. Cand get it any cheaper in an auto store.

You might want to check AMSOil! They have it, as well as other products which meet or exceed no parts specifications. That includes differentials, transfer case, and transmission.

So, that's $92.99 for oil and filter + $6.04 sales tax where I live a d free shipping since I'm a prime member = total cost of $99.03 + my time. Two weeks ago I paid my local Ram dealer $90.95 including tax to do it for me. And I didn't have to get dirty. Just saying...:)
For me, probably the worst part of changing my oil is disposing of the old oil.

We have the acceptance sites around us for "trash" and such, they have a giant oil bin for oil and bucket for the filters. Pretty nice.

I think my city offers oil collection, but it's only on scheduled weekends throughout the year. I think anyplace that sells oil is required to take used oil, but every time I try to take oil to one of those places it seems like their collection bin is full, or nearly full. It's all just such a hassle. Between that, and Jiffy Lube can change my oil in about half the time I can do it, it's usually worth it for me to just pay an extra $50 to pay them to do it.

It was better when I was a teenager and we lived next to a field. We would just go to the field and dump our used oil on the dirt road through the field. :)
