I read somewhere Toyota went to all 0w oils to force synthetic oil to be used in all their vehicles. Cant remember where I read that tho. I doubt its for fuel economy, the difference between a 0w and 5w is negligible at best.

That was also the idea behind Dexos, wasn't it? Only a synthetic oil could meet Dexo specs? In addition to the nice gratuity for using the trademark.

GM monetized oil two ways - lower warranty costs (supposedly), more aftermarket branding sales.

So is it more marketing than logic that the numbers are 0W16 instead of 0W15? Will we see 0W14 / 0w13 and so on in the future just so every car manufacturer get there own?

Yeah I think they gave us a couple free oil changes but honestly I don’t have time to drive up there with the schedules we keep so I’ll just keep on doing it myself. Last free oil change I had was on my 15 Ram and they put 5W20 in it and we all know what happened about 20K miles later.

Same @Burla - I'm using 5W-30 in wife's Mazda CX-5 with 2.5L I4 engine. Mazda calls for 5W-30 in this motor because it's turbocharged. I believe the non-turbo versions call for 5W-20, but not positive I remember accurately.

Toyota holds firm to the 0W's for some reason. Maybe it's for U.S. EPA, but since Toyota makes principally small vehicles, why would they need to? Very strange.
0w-20 for the NA 2.5L mazdas

Just throw some 15w40 in :peace:
I had an old 1996 Toyota Tercel that had about 100,000 miles and was using 5W30 more than I liked. I started running the Quaker State 5W50 Synthetic in that little 4 banger and it loved it. Ran quiet and used very little oil. I sold it to a buddies niece with about 190,000 miles on it and she drove it another 5 years before she gave it to her nephew and he destroyed it. I don't understand the need for 0W16 oil.

with all certainly they will, once they figure out they cant get negative viscosity they will launch all the nukes for the planets sake.

Gotta be EPA C.A.F.E. regs., or advertise the most miniscule fuel mileage gain.

Pretty soon be spec'ing antifreeze.

All good news, I think we missed something. I looked this up to verify as you see there will be a 0w16. If I was gonna ever use that **** you know it would be high moly ester based?

Redline's new viscosity and other info pdf.

FULL SYNTHETIC - Group IV PAO/Group V ester base stocks with ~2300 ppm Zinc, 1850 ppm Phosphorus as ZDDP 800 ppm Molybdenum

When the series finally gets an update, looks like moly is climbing across the board. And I forget why we were mad about 0w30, at 10.8 cSt with 800ppm moly, looks like a winner?

I guess one of these days one of ram forum's uoa's will show up with 800ppm moly, and then eventually they all will be. Maybe it will be 0w30 first since they seams to have a shortage, maybe this will get new formula out there first, dunno?

Do you have the letter from Dave way back stating what was changing on 0W-30?
Thought they originally were gonna drop moly way down, in addition to API SP additive changes?

Mike,

That was a good catch, some of our formulations are changing to address the new SN+/SP requirements as well as C2/C3 and C5.

I would expect the moly level would remain the same, the ester/PAO will not be changing.

The current 5W20 and 5W30 formula will not be changing, the Euro Series 5W30 will be the new SP formula, as well as the 0W30.

We were hoping this would have occurred 3 or 4 months ago, but the additive is on allocation and don’t currently have an ETA.

Regards,

All I see is a slight viscosity drop from old 0w30, I think I over reacted to that.
