I'm looking to do the first oil change on my 2022 2500 6.4L gas. The manual says to use 0W-40 oil. I've been to two local auto parts stores and they don't have it.

Is this stuff usually difficult to find, or is it just a fluke?
It is simple to find

You might want to check AMSOil! They have it, as well as other products which meet or exceed no parts specifications. That includes differentials, transfer case, and transmission.
Yes the amzoil 0W40 signature series, Is what I've used since new, in the PW and I'm at 8000 miles. Just sent the last oil (That I used all summer for towing, wheeling and general high temp driving) out for analysis, at my last oil change 2 weeks ago.
As far as availability goes there is an Amzoil distribution center 12 minutes from my house, So it's easier to get than running down to the local Napa or up here in the great white North, Canadian tire, Where they carry every type of oil except red line and amzoil.

I think my city offers oil collection, but it's only on scheduled weekends throughout the year. I think anyplace that sells oil is required to take used oil, but every time I try to take oil to one of those places it seems like their collection bin is full, or nearly full. It's all just such a hassle. Between that, and Jiffy Lube can change my oil in about half the time I can do it, it's usually worth it for me to just pay an extra $50 to pay them to do it.

It was better when I was a teenager and we lived next to a field. We would just go to the field and dump our used oil on the dirt road through the field. :)
Jiffy Lube or any quick lube place, Be Wary!
I can tell you from experience and from many journeymen mechanics that I know, that started at quick oil change places like Jiffy Lube. Be warned if you go there check your oil level immediately after, first off.
Not only that, a lot of these kids, we'll check your air filter etc and not put all the clips back on properly or Not seat the air filter properly after pulling it out and checking it. they sometimes won't push your dipstick back in all the way, Or Torque you're diff to about a 100 Foot pounds.
It can also happen at dealers in the quick lube change lane.
I try to only change my own oil yet, yet last summer I was at was that the dealer to get a part for one of my jeeps and I decided I didn't have time to change my oil, so I pulled my JK Into the Mopar Quick lube change lane and After instructing them not to check anything else, diff fuild ect. please just change the oil.
Kid underneath was done, yelled to the kid up top, that he was done, the Kid up top put the oil in. I was sitting in my Jeep, he Gives me the keys back and tells me to fire it up and rev it to 2500 and hold it there for 30 seconds.
We got to about 3 seconds, as he forgot to put the cap on the oil filter Housing! And oil sprayed onto the car in the next lane And I got a good oil coating For the Winter all over the engine.
The service manager came out and just dropped his Head.
This is why I only change my own oil!

For me, probably the worst part of changing my oil is disposing of the old oil.
If you cut your own firewood, one good option is saving it for chain oil. Yeah, it's not recommended but I've been doing that for 50 years with no problem. I consider it the ultimate recycling, saves money, saves resources.

At the rate of about 14 quarts per year, that sounds like a lot of chain oil!

(I don't cut my own firewood. I don't even have a fireplace or a chainsaw.)

Look into waste oil burner, fire a kiln or even use it as garage heat. Makes you want to go to oil stop and ask them for all their old oil, lol.

Places like Quick Lube, can't be trusted to use the brand of oil that you request on the invoice.

Years ago, i asked for Castrol at a Jiffy Lube

I watched them pour Valvoline into my engine.
I waited until they were pouring in the last quart & grabbed the guy in the office, so that he could see.

I watched them catch the Valvoline & put it in containers that were in the trash cans. some body would be using it, think it was new.

They also said that they checked the rear differential, i asked the manager how long the employees arms were, because the rear end was about 5' away from the open service pit.

That Jiffy Lube is still open, but the employees are usually sitting in the shade holding special offer signs

I signed up for the Amsoil preferred thing so i get a little better price that way. I’m doing 6+ oil Changes per year so it helps. I’ve done the oil analysis twice now with running Amsoil 0-40 since new and they said it’s doing very good and it runs quiet and smooth.

I use 0W40 in my '12 Charger Super Bee. I can usually find Mobil 1 0W40 at my local Walmart, don't remember what I last paid but I'm thinking around $35 for a 5 qt. jug. Every other oil change I buy two 5 qt. jugs so I don't have to buy 2 extra quarts (more expensive).

You can use 5w-40, the difference from 0w-40 is that it can be used in cold start ups at temperatures as low as minus 35 deg C, the 0w is as low as minus 40 deg C. The 40 number is the viscosity at operating temperature, hot engine. The higher the number, the thicker the oil. I wouldn't use any 30 numbers, maybe only the first 10 thousand km in a colder climate. Yes, dealerships are saying that it's more fuel efficient, but it comes at a cost, thinner film between the parts in the engine, lower oil pressure and so, more wear.

If I had that truck id be running 10W 40. Its a better oil and I live in SC so temps never drop below 20F. The farther away the viscosity #'s the more additives they add to the oil. Keep it close if ya can... just my opinion. My current ram gets 10w30. That 5w 20 just too thin for the south heat. Again my opinion and what I run

you re better off not finding it. I found on my scatpack and viper, using 5w40 caused less valve noise at idle or low rpms when the engine is hot. By accident. local oil change place was out of 0w40. zero weight might be great for high rpms for lubrication but not so much where 99.8 percent of us drive. On the street.

This is from the 2019 manual. Yours may differ:
Use Mopar SAE 0W-40 engine oil approved to FCA Material
Standard MS-12633 such as Pennzoil Ultra equivalent is
recommended for all operating temperatures.

There are not that many oils that meet the 12633 standard. I have to order the Pennzoil from Amazon and it isn't cheap. I just discovered that Valvoline makes a European style 0W-40 that also meets the 12633 standard. It is also available in large containers at Advance and my local store had it. Typically European 0W-40s do not meet the 12633 standard, but the Valvoline does and it is reasonably priced.

Autozone and many oil change businesses take old oil. I've been doing that for years.
