Never ending saga…..

I got a call on 4/14 that the truck was fixed. Apparently they put yet another new DEF pump in ( 3rd or 4th) and suddenly the codes were cleared. I picked the truck up the following afternoon and didn’t make it home before the CEI light was back on. Again a 208C, Reductant Pump Control Circuit Low.

The dealership sent a driver with a loaner vehicle the following day. Only partially helpful because the loaner is not capable of safely towing my camper. Additionally I was told that I am not allowed to use the loaner for any type of towing.

I spoke to the dealership this morning. I was told that they are requesting the Regional Service Technician come to the dealership and assess the vehicle. This will take several days for approval and travel time.

The vehicle has been continuously out of service for 21 days thus far……

Dealership states “known issue” but they have not been able to fix it with the “usual” repairs.

This should stand as a caution to anyone considering the CTD in a 2500/ 3500….
Hopefully you've been documenting every phone call (when, who you talked to, time of call, every possible detail), email and logging all of the time you've spent on this issue. Sounds like you may need that detailed info. For nothing else to use as leverage.

Really does suck!

Thanks.

Part of my continuing this thread is to help my memory and support any documentation going forward.

Man, this sucks, I'm sorry you're dealing with it. I had a '14 Ram 1500 5.7 that got a new motor early on (not before cam and other internals and accessories), around 7k miles IIRC, and still was making strange noises after they replaced it. Rather than dealing with the lemon process, which in hind sight I should have done, FCA paid my lease payments while I was out of the truck and gave me a lifetime warranty on it, so that sounded fair enough at the time. I was out of the truck for close to 6 months I believe overall. We outgrew the quad cab and traded out of the truck for a crew cab 2016 1500. We outgrew that and I now have my 2019 2500 and it's been good through 36k miles so far.
Hopefully you have a resolution soon!

So here we are at the close of business on day 29. I was told by the dealership this morning that the case has been assigned to a new Engineer at STAR ( the Service Tech support), sounds like back to square one.

I tried to get assistance from FCA Customer Care but was blown off by the person that answered the call ( my assigned person was not in today). I was told that there are documents for pursuing a Lemon Law review in the owner packet which is in the truck at the dealership.

I did an internet search and found that FCA utilizes a third party for review and submitted a claim through their web site. States will take at least 2 days for analysis of eligibility. I expect the process will drag on for months and I am weary already.

All I want is a functioning vehicle in my driveway…..

You checked in to an attorney? I did a quick search and it looks like your state is required to pay for all attorney fees if successful. You might talk to an attorney if you haven't already and see what they think.

Jerry-
I may go for an attorney. I am going to give the system a chance to work first. Thanks for the advice.

Go for the lawyer. One that specializes in Lemon Law, not just some regular lawyer.

They will handle everything. They make their money from the manufacturers.
I'm on my second Cummins. First was a '17 and this one is '20. No problems and as long as they keep making them, I will keep buying them.

I read the whole thread and didn't see if there may have been bad DEF when you bought it.
My '17 sat on the dealers lot for over 9 months because it had the dreaded water pump recall. The dealer made sure they flushed out and cleaned the DEF lines before I took it since it had been in the tank so long.

Going to close out this thread.

I got a call from the dealership on day 39 that they went out to the truck, which has been sitting for a couple of days, to do the radio software update. When they started the truck the CEI was off. They checked and didn’t find any active alerts. Drove a total of about 250 miles and the light did not come on.

I picked it up this morning. They had also done a software update to the PCM, but that was yesterday. Truck seems to run fine.

Fingers crossed…..

My thoughts are with all you folks having trouble with the new trucks and all the "CRAP" attached to them, but unfortunately it's the way of the world. That's why I found and bought a 1994/Cummins/5-speed. All mechanical, and still relatively simple (although it has it's problems and disadvantages. I will say this: I grew up in LA in the days when the smog was so thick it hurt your lungs to breathe but from what I see now, it's definitely better and vehicle exhaust was a part of that.

OMG I've ordered a 2022 2500 CTD. Reading these posts makes me terrified to follow through with purchase. I only invested $500 down to order. Now wondering if I should just go for 1500 5.7.

On the positive, my 2015 RAM 3500 Cummins has never given me a problem outside of the rear air leveling system, the compressor failed. It was replaced by my dealer proto. My 2013 RAM 1500 was the same way and I traded that in on a 2022 ECOdiesel. My wife and I just completed a 2,500-mile see America trip issue free in the 2022.

I believe RAM sold well over 500,000 RAMs for the model year 2021. I have no idea the warranty rate or what the warranty claims were, but I think it is an extreme minimum of the vehicles sold. On the forums, we only hear the complaints, one here and one there, hardly a representation of all RAM owners.

Realize the parts used in RAMs are made by suppliers, these parts or facsimiles of the parts go into all nameplates. When people stomp their feet saying this may be my last nameplate because of an issue, if they follow through, they could just get more of the same with a different emblem on the front grill. I say get what you want, that is what I do.

Why are even bothering to buy a 2500 CTD if you don't even need that much truck?
A 1500 rides so much nicer and you can get the same crew cab w/6.4' bed like the 2500 if it's bed space you need.

Yes, that's what I realized later today. People with no issues spend less time on forums.

Good common thoughts, but I'm in the stage of life age wise and fortunately can buy what I desire. Truck is not a NEED at all at this time, it's an early retirement gift to myself. I drove EVERYTHING and yes the air ride 1500 is fantastic. But I drove the 2500 CTD and FELL in LOVE. LOLOLOL

I daily drive a 2013 Dodge Charger since new with 87,000 miles and 5.7 Hemi with no issues. Also, a 2016 Jeep Wrangler bought new and no issues either. Thanks for all feedback.

Holy resurrected zombie post Batman!

last Friday, 9-23-2022 I got the Bad DEF see dealer warning, then CEI, then 150 mile countdown. Spent Friday-Sunday on my farm (central Tennessee, soon to be full-time home), puttering about in my HMMWV, got truck into Columbia TN dealership with a P207c code. $607 and 36 hours later I had my truck back.

so today I’m halfway back to Maryland and the DEF/CEI come on, 100 miles later the final countdown.

Fortunately was about ten miles from Abingdon, VA, right by Blue Ridge CDJR where my truck, now throwing a P208c code they can’t clear, and it’s in the shop getting tested now.

I’ll keep you posted.

anyone working on a class-action yet?

All the green you see is corrosion. Urea being highly corrosive you see.

Technician MUST have gotten plug/socket wet when he pulled the pump for testing yesterday at the dealership in Columbia, TN.

keeping my fingers crossed.

Code cleared, seems to be working but Tech (a perfectionist after my own heart) wants to test injector- requires heating/removal of some bolts from the catalyst chamber where the DEF does its magic.

BUT he can’t do it today- outta time. I wanna go home. I’ll risk it. I mean, I know the pump WORKS, and it’s pushing fluid into the chamber, exhaust smells funny and I used a1/4 tank (1 gallon or more) of DEF in just 300 miles today while I usually only use 2.5 gallons every other trip.

more soon.

This second leg, about 370 miles towing an empty 6x12 aluminum trailer went smoothly- DEF gauge needle didn’t budge..

i have several types of Deoxit contact cleaners and small brushes.

tomorrow I pull the wiring harness plug from the DEF injector pump, clean sll traces of corrosion and reassemble.

Class action lawsuit on what? Are you trying to make lawyers rich because all class action suits do is award millions to the lawyer. You will have better odds with a go fund me page.

Get a DEF refractometer, it will save a lot of headaches.
