So my 2015 Big Horn is doing something kinda odd. When it’s cold and until the transmission temp gets to around 130, there’s a delay in the 1-2 shift. With my normal acceleration and warmed up, it usually shifts around 15-1700, but the first few miles after sitting overnight it’s like 2000-2200 before it will go to 2nd. After 2nd it’s all good. No weird noises or shutter, just doesn’t shift as soon as 2-3, 3-4 etc

Does this happen during just the first shift then shifts normal? It's not to odd for that scenario to happen.
Define what you mean by cold out? Someone in Florida has a different opinion what's cold as compared to North Dakota. Are you idling the truck to warm it up? How long does it take for the trans to get to 130° ?

@ToddS1971 mine does this as well, for as long as I've driven the truck and paid attention to such things. But after the first couple of up-shifts, it starts behaving more normally, even the next 1-2 shift at the next stop sign a couple of seconds later, with the engine still "cold." At start-up, I don't normally let the engine warm up beyond a minute or so to get my bearings and set up my audio devices. I generally try to go easy and gentle on and off the throttle when first pulling out of my driveway due to this, which seems to help coax it into that first 1-2 up-shift. Truck just needs to wake up after sleeping all night. I don't blame it.

Yeah, today the second time it 1-2 shifted it was a little quicker, but still 1900-2000. Just is what it is I guess.

Mine tends to do that as well. I have a Banks tuner and tuned it to the economy setting. It seems to shift better than the stock tune...moves up in gears quicker at lower rpm, but when it's cold, the first shift of the day from 1st to 2nd is still a bit delayed.

I’ve been having shiftily issues since brand-new and I have a 22 warlock. It would take up to four seconds shifting from reverse to drive. My truck is currently in getting a new valve body put in. If that doesn’t correct the issue they are ordering a brand new transmission

I have noticed the delayed 1st shift from 1st to 2nd as well, but i have several other things going on too that may be related, but wanted to get some input..

My truck is a 2015 1500, 5.7L, 4x4, CC, BigHorn with 61K miles.
8HP70 Transmission, 3.92 gears, LSD
It has Tow/haul mode, but no trailer braking module.

Besides the delayed shift from 1 to 2, it is also a very loud shift, like the roar of a fan for 2-3 seconds as it shifts then the noise is quieter on the second shift and so on. Mine also seems a bit sloppy, shifting for about 3 minutes or so, then seems fairly smooth. I have also noticed a whine that seems to match the revs, seems to only happen when I am travelling at 40mph or less, and more audible the slower i am going, and even more than that when coasting down a hill, which leads me into my next issue. My next issue is that is the truck will never just coast down a hill at a higher gear, it will always try to shift down a gear or more and is seems very aggressive, and not consistent (sometimes it will feel like hitting the brakes somewhat firmly, and sometimes it just feels like it shifts from 7 to 6, but doesnt rev high or feel like the brakes were pressed firmly.) within a second or 2 of letting off the gas. Do these trucks do engine braking? and should it be acting like this? Its very hilly where I live, but I'm rarely on anything like a mountain.

It's always garaged when not in use, and has never leaked fluid.

Have any of you seen this, and know where I should start looking?

thanks in advance!

I will try some errands in tow/haul mode tomorrow.. If it still does it in tow/haul mode do you think this is a trans fluid issue, transmission issue, torque convertor?

So i did some errands with Tow/Haul enabled, the truck still experienced engine braking, and i would say it seemed a bit stronger, making the slowing down and braking process more jerky as it would shift to a lower gear before when I would think it would. If I was slowing down from 50 for a red light, I would let off the accelerator, it would start engine braking jerky, then it would repeat as it slowed, shifting, revs go up, jerking as it slows down rapidly as the gear changes.

Are these trucks supposed to do engine braking that aggressively if at all? Can they not just coast down a hill?

thanks!

My 14 RT does this as well. 1st shift of day, is not smooth and takes a few extra seconds and higher rams. Putting it in reverse for about 30 seconds helps. Kinda like its filling the converter.

I have experienced the engine braking as well usually 4th gear, sometimes 3rd.

I find, it does it less if the transmission is 140 degrees or more. Under 140 degrees the 1 2 shift is a first time thing. But the downshifting is constant.

I'm tuned and it still happens. I'm 3.92 gears. 4x2

Oddly enough, my 16 does not do this. 16 is 4x4 quad cab, 3.21
