I have a 2017 Ram 2500 power wagon with 76,*** miles.

Approx 500 miles ago I noticed a slight humming/whining/whirring noise that I was attributing to the transmission, although it could have been comming from the alternator etc on the engine.
At first I could only hear it with the windows rolled down driving past buildings, up to about 35mph then road noise drowned it out. RPMs affected the tone of the noise. It can now be heard with the windows up.

A few miles ago I noticed a change in the smoothness of the shifting once in a while. Now while sitting stopped in reverse or drive, or shutting off the engine in park, I have a prominent dancing rattling noise. But I could be convinced the noise is violent fluid movement. The noise goes away after moving faster than a crawl, then comes back just before stopping.

What's the most likely problem, and should I drive it 30 miles to the repair shop or load it on a rollback?

The rfe doesnt rotate fluid in park, it does in neutral with e brake on flat ground. Most likely it is something in valve body. Try neutral and get under truck, can you hear it right at trans pan?

Ok I'll listen under the truck, and in park it dosen't make noise except for half a second after you shut off the truck.

I crawled under the truck. The noise is definitely coming from the very front of the trany, not the pan, when in drive and reverse. The noise is very active for 15 seconds then diminishes to nothing by 80 seconds. If you drive foreward the noise stops, then stop the vehicle, leaving it in drive, the noise comes back to do its thing all over again.

I checked another thing today, when power breaking the noise speeds up with RPMs.

Yeah that's horrible, now I doubt that is VB unless a piece got loose, maybe torque converter. If someone can figure out how to fix that w/o dropping the tranny, they are much smarter then me.

More than likely one of the flex plate or torque converter bolts has loosened and is hitting in there. I can't remember if there is an inspection access plate that you can remove and look in there. I wouldn't drive it much more before you get it into a shop.

If you end up dropping it, while it is down it would be a great idea to replace VB with upgraded/updated one, solenoid pack as well. This is one part where aftermarket would be a better choice then oem. It would be cheaper then you think, for both maybe a grand. Rebuilding tranny may not be needed if it was driving fine before this happened.

Wow, these trannys are not aging well. I know we only hear about the stories when there are problems but I swear lately everyday there is someone with a new tranny problem. I suppose I'm also a bit jaded since I've had two failures with my 66rfe (38K & 90K miles).

OP yeah it sounds like something is loose or broken in there. I agree it sounds like fluid whooshing around past something.
