The great white and salty Canadian winter is coming so I spent some time this weekend (aka the entire weekend) working on the back 1/2 of the truck to remove 8 years worth of Krown and crud before it goes in for another coat next week. The frame itself was in excellent condition underneath the built up oil, with just the edges of the metal having surface rust and peeling. Honestly, it was wayyyy more work than I anticipated, so I didn't even get around to cleaning off the underside of the box. I used a plastic trowel to scrape off the bulk of the gunk, then hit it with POR15 degreaser diluted 1:5, dried it with shop towels, scuffed it with scotch brite pads(wire wheels in some areas) and then used Tremclad Rust Reformer in matte black followed by Tremclad rust paint in semi-gloss. My recommendation to anyone else wanting to do this - don't be stupid, use a pressure washer to remove all this stuff. Regardless, as sore as I am, I'm happy that she looks fresh from behind again. Onto the main frame rails and front end next weekend!

As you can tell, up under the box is still super dirty.

I've removed the spare for when it goes in to get undercoated next week. Also, the front end in the background is the same colour that the axle back here was! Can't wait to get it all tidied up.

Are you sure that’s the same undercarriage???

Wow……. Great job, and detailed. Amazing. That’s coming from someone with serious car/ truck OCD :favorites37:

Changed the spark plugs (~75k miles). All looked normal except one of the plugs on #8 had some oil on it...found some oil on the ignitor boot, too. I'm thinking it's a valve cover/spark plug tower gasket and will replace that soon-ish.

Haha thanks man. Really excited to get the rest of the truck done.. but that will be a task for the spring. For now, it's going to be a mild fall week which will be ideal for another coat of Krown!

Where did you get the replacement seat skin?

Got it off ebay, it's not a 100% match, and it isn't an exact fit, but for the price and considering the mileage and age of my truck, it's fine.

Who's brake rotors ya got there?

AC Delco 40$ Amazon Wearhouse deal special and 25$ AC Delco Ceramic Pads Amazon Wearhouse deal special

I did Power Stop 5 years ago and its a waste of money up here and our **** weather. They rusted and failed just like every other brand.

The Calipers are still good, Powder coating is flaking bad.

Thanks for reply. I've been debating whether to go Powerstop vs. conventional solid coated rotors. I live in similar climate, with wide temperature swings, snow, and road salt.

Was cruising Rock Auto tonight. Power Stop is the only rotor OEM that uses plain, old zinc dichromate dip coating on their rotors (60 year old coating technology) - that's why they wear off and rust so fast. But it's the cheapest. Why they'd go cheap on coatings for a machined rotor is beyond me.

Conversely, Bosch & Raybestos are using a blended zinc and aluminum coating to last much longer. Aluminum isn't as galvanic (sacrificial) compared to steel as zinc is, so the blend yields early and late protection.

My son insisted on Bosch. FYI

Try the R1 Concept Geomet rotors. I put them on my truck and they don't get surface rust at all. Now I don't live up north so not sure what salt would do but I like that they stay shiny instead of rusting.
