There are many who believe that rustproofing causes more rust (by harboring microscopic amounts of water and dirt / salts) than it prevents. I used to live in a high-salt area where everyone did it and I personally came to feel it was a fad / waste of money. Many manufacturers state that it VOIDS the warranty -- which is a cause for pause when you think about it.

Just don't use that old fashioned black stuff that is sprayed on hardens
That stuff grabs in some areas & leaves a void between the black product & the under carriage.
Water will intrude sooner or later & you will get rust between under coating & the sheet metal
There is a difference between 'rubberized' undercoat and pure petroleum based undercoat, like Ziebart.

I Rust Check mine yearly, I get the platinum in the spring which includes a free touch up in the fall. I have done faithfully with this truck and it is in very nice shape still. It is a very low mileage Ram, but it still gets used in the winter occasionally. Where i live, there is only 2 sources for under coating, Rust Check and Krown. I worked for a fleet for a long time who used Krown on their commercial vehicles yearly, they rusted badly. That is not to say the Krown product is bad, but it does show the quality behind the application could use improvement.

Most of the rust I have seen on all pickups is above the wheel wells in the box. Rust proofing and oil coating generally do not get those areas. My favorite body man tells me to get some heavy oil and spray it down into that area. Also wash out the dirt a time or two a year so that wet dirt is not sitting between the inner wheel well and the outer skin.
Good info. BUT Rustproof it yourself, It takes about 10-15 minutes to pull out the rear plastic inner fenders, now you can get at the entire inside of fender. You can even do the same in the front (they take a few minutes longer). If you have the patience you can even get at the "cab corners" from the inside. But that is work! I just got, my new to me, 16 Ram from WV ( I live Upstate NY) Kept my Dakota for 22 years. I keep things a while. So I will be doing that this year. Have a 2002 Century that will become the winter vehicle ( On a motorcycle 9 months of the year- rain or shine- any temp above 33 F.)

Rams are probably the easiest to do by yourself.

I don't remember on my 4th gens, but on DTs the cab corners are easy to access because there's a factory plug located in the lower rear corner of the rear door jambs.

Just like the 4th gens, there are a series of oval plugs located along the bottom of the rocker panels making it fairly easy to access without drilling.

The doors are easy, too. There's a rectangular shaped rubber vent plug on the rear face of each door jamb.

I've been applying Fluid Film for years now and my truck is rust free at almost 10 years old on the coast of New England.

Rustproofing 4th & 5th Gen Rams: Addendum

"Just like the 4th gens, there are a series of oval plugs located along the bottom of the rocker panels making it fairly easy to access without drilling."

Forgot to mention the obvious black tape that seals off large openings on the inside bulkhead of the rocker panels. Makes it real easy to inject fluids or whatever you're using. I have used black duct tape to replace the factory tape, and if you are sure to remove any residue from around the opening, I've found duct tape has withstood four years of under-spray car washes.

Every truck i have ever owned old or new i have always sprayed it with my used oil. Once a year i would mix up a weed sprayer with 50/50 oil and mineral spirits and take a morning and spray it down and then let it sit for the rest of the day to drip off. Not something you want to do in a nice driveway. My veh never rusted after that or got worse. Stinks for a few days after while its burning off the exhaust also made things easier to take apart.
