I got a 1989 w150 that im swapping from auto to manual. I have an np435 out of a 79 powerwagon. I rebuild the shifter tower and put new bearings and such in. However I am not able to get it into 1st gear or reverse. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all work fine. When I try to put it into first it pops in slightly but with minimal effort it will pop out if I push the shifter back slightly and it won't even attempt to do into reverse. I did make sure to put the tower and gears both into neutral position before I put the tower back on. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Also would like to add that with the tower off, the tower will go into first and reverse. The transmission will go into first and reverse if I manually move the gears into first and reverse

Many older manual transmissions don't 'fall' into the non-syncro gears with ease.

Put the shifter in neutral, release the clutch for a second, and try again. After some practice, you learn to grab the gear before the internals completely stop spinning.

I was going to say .. Shift out of one gear & into neutral push the clutch a couple times & Then put it into what gear your scratching for.

I'm going to restate My Post ...
When trying to get the old NP435 I knew ome old boy who had one back in the day. He'd stop completely Shift it over into reverse & Then back up into 1st .
& Others had to completely come to a stop. & Then slightly let out on the clutch While holding a little pressure on the clutch pedal .
On ounce of grind & Into gear it'd go.
