Hello everyone.
I have a 2011 Ram 1500 5.7 1500 Big Horn with the 5-Spd Automatic 545RFE Transmission with 99,600 miles. While doing the oil change I noticed the transmission pan was wet. It looks like it is rotted probably a pin hole. Not a big deal I was looking at the Dorman 265-870 and figured I should change the fluid and filter also. I keep seeing the filters that say for deep pan or for shallow pan. When I was looking at the transmission pans there was no mention of deep or shallow pans. So I am confused. Also this truck is 4WD.
I purchased the truck 3 yrs. ago with 89,600 miles on it. I believe the previous owner serviced the transmission because the fluid is nice and pink and no burnt smell at all.
My question is how can I tell which Filter to order?
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

if your truck is 4x4 you need the deep pan and the long neck sump filter. the canister one that comes in the 2 filter kit (i used wix) is for the return filter. change them both and use the dorman oil pan with drain plug it fit perfectly on mine!
the only thing i got at the dealer at that time (been a few years) was the atf+4 cause it was cheaper by the gallon then every big box store and napa around here?!?
these days who knows
my 180k km 545rfe shifted like new after I was done thats for sure! flushed all the old oil out the cooler line and ran new fluid through the system and out the cooler line into a bucket untill it was new coming out.
good times, cant wait to tackle my new 8 speed when the time comes!

Thank you for your reply. I ordered the pan and 2 pc wix filter kit today. I decided to go with the Amsoil fluid. Glad to hear you used those parts and they worked out, there are so many choices.
Thank you again

I wound up overpaying at the dealer for my filters since this was the 1st time I ever worked on a 65rfe and the parts stores couldn't decide if what they had was right for my truck or not.
I did get a fel pro pan gasket since I am no fan of RTV for a trans pan seal.
I found the best price on ATF+4 at farm and fleet.
This was about 2 weeks ago. I'm at 106k on my 12 reg cab long bed 2wd ram 1500.
Oh 1 more thing.... After I walked away from the parts counter at the stealership with my $80 worth of filters, I was looking at the receipt and noticed it said "4x4" for the pan filter, so I went back in, they looked it back up again and said "they all say that, pay no attention to it, that's the right one"
I got home and compared it to the old one and it is the same as what I took out even though my truck isn't a 4wd. I put the same pan back on that I took off, I know by the records that came with the truck that it had had a trans service at 50k, wonder if the last guy to do the trans service changed the pan to the deeper one? IDK how deep is deep and how shallow is shallow on these.

I had to replace my transmission pan due to rot. Dorman products only sells the deep pan for these trucks. I had the deep pan anyway because mine is 4x4. The replacement pan had a drain plug in it, but the original did not. I wish I kept the instructions that came with the wix filter kit because it had a nice diagram showing the difference between the 2 pans. wix sells 2 different kits one for deep pan and one for shallow pan.

Get a metal thread upgrade, they come with plastic threads and have killed many rfe's,. some on this board. They have synthetic filter options as well, if you are on a long interval synthetic is the only way to go. Sump filters are synthetic, this is for the canister. You should toss out that wix and get a synthetic, that filter you bought will be stiff in 3k miles. By all means use the sump filter that came with that kit.

Dorman is pretty poor quality, I know people who bought them and replaced them. I would keep an eye on it if you already ordered it. I think the main issue was it wasnt deep enough, maybe your pan is deeper, dunno.

you need this exact one with the hex screw, they fit the best, those billet ones are loose. If you buy a multipack, every time someone does, you can sell a couple on the board.
