Got this truck in February and this is my first UOA with Valvoline Entended Protection 5w-20. Don’t mind the name ;) Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The oil itself looks very good, that product has made huge improvements over past formulas. With your tbn I maybe am a little surprised it is as 3.2 for a 3400 mile run. It kinda looks like a 5 maybe 6k mile oil, most synthetics seam to be about a 10k mile interval, and that has to do with protection against acid buildup. It would be helpful to see a voa to see where their tbn starts at. I would say if this is a new engine those wear numbers are so good it is hard to believe, but if that engine is older just new to you, the numbers still look real good. That copper is so low makes me question if that is a hemi, lol. That's a good thing. The only knock I see is if you stay with this oil and not much reason not to, don't push out the interval to much farther. Like blackstone said, try 5k miles next time. That oil is treating you well.

Thanks guys! Lots of short trips back and forth to work and the occasional 100-150 round trip drive on the weekend for fishing. Not sure if that could affect my not so great iron number or the TBN. I’ll go to 5k this time. This is also the second oil change on the truck. the first one I had a Mobil 1 filter and now im using the RP 20-500 :)

Yeah, I would say short trips is the entire reason for the lower then expected tbn at those low miles. That is very hard on oil and engine itself, especially emissions systems. So yeah, stay on short interval due to short trips. As long as you don't tow heavy, that thin oil may be beneficial for short trips as well.

Now, if you double the iron number it is a tad high, because that would represent a average interval in miles. Copper would still be low. Point being, if you ever want to play with oil viscosity, I would try 5w30 same brand and see if it effects iron number and keep that copper number nice and low like it is.

No towing for me! I plan on trying the lubrication strategy sooner or later but I have no issues currently besides what I think is just noisy injectors. I live in Upper Michigan so it gets quite cold. You still think 5w-30 would be the best option? Potential for -30 degree Fahrenheit or even less

Good lord, look at the moly in that stuff!! Seems like way overkill seeing as diminishing wear protection above 200 ppm. Wonder what they're thinking? More is always better?
Reading the forum my understanding was that more Moly is always better for an engine because it reduces friction and quenches LSPI. Now I'm confused. Can you please clarify?

Welcome. Escanaba, eh? Went to a Lake States Logging Congress there when I was with Mobil Oil.

Like most lubricant additives, oil-soluble Moly (MoDTC) has a sharp falloff in benefit after a certain quantity. A test study of machine element wear showed that point being app. 200 ppm, where amounts higher had greatly diminshed benefit.

We generally want a 200 ppm Moly minimum, but amounts greatly higher take away from the base oil quantity, which lubricates machine elements in full fluid film conditions. The Moly plates out as a dry-film lubricant on highly-loaded elements that are under boundary lubrication conditions - especially the roller valve lifters and camshaft in Hemi engines. These parts are marginally-oiled in these engines.

Another report from my '12 Hemi.

I did change it up a bit for this change, going from Castrol 5w30 synthetic to Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (still 5w30). No other changes - truck does run noticeably smoother and quieter with PUP.

That's like the best hemi on the board, the best I remember seeing. I might get off that mos2, long term you will have a bunch of that in powder form all over the place. And your reports are so good I doubt it is benefiting you.

I still don't know where the high iron number came from - but it was near the time I removed and milled my exhaust manifolds flat. Perhaps a few iron dust particles were still in the manifolds when I reinstalled them? It's a really reaching theory....and the can of brake cleaner I used on each of them before installing should have done the trick; but one never knows.
