To save myself an f-load of time because I suck at searching for things in a thread that is 4600 pages long and I need a simple answer, can someone tell me if I want to run 5W-20 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and drop some Biotech lubeguard in with it, how much would you add? i'm assuming that 1 quart would be overkill but I also don't want 1/2 of a bottle of oil just sitting around in my garage never to be used.

Edit* - Also, i have only 3k miles on my RP 20-820 so I'm thinking of leaving it on the truck and switching to the M1 oil and once i go back to my 5w30 oil in the summer changing the filter then. Would anyone else do this too? just seems pointless when in reality this filter can easily go beyond 10k miles and still filter just fine.

thanks :)
I've left the 20-820 on for 2 years and cut it open and it was still like new, no worries. Lubegard treat rate for that oil 15 ounce size, since you are not replacing filter just add 6 quarts start the engine and run a bit then turn off and check the level.

^^^I was adding two 10 oz bottles to my Hemi when I was using it. I would leave the filter on since you have low miles on it.

I switched to 5W30 Redline on my last oil change so I have no need for Lubegard now.
I was only going to switch due to winter temps but you're in canada and you're not having any piston slap with RL 5w-30? I don't believe I am but I have no f'in clue what that even sounds like ahaha. Just didn't want to ever experience it. I just have 6 quarts of M1 oil sitting in my garage that I want to use up but i also worry that will remove the additives of the RL 5w30 that the last 3k miles may have coated. If that makes sense. @Burla what are your thoughts?

I never had lifter tick though just noisy injectors so i'm wondering if I should just run the Costco M1 5w20 in winter and M1 5w30 in summer with 15 oz Biotech each time. Seems like I could be wasting my money on RL if this lube strategy would work well for less.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Add 3 oz. of Bio/Tech for every quart of motor oil to the crank case. Can be added at any point in motor oil life. For best results, add to fresh oil during oil change. 10 oz. bottle treats one 3-1/2 quart system. 15 oz. bottle treats one 5 quart system.

I could only get 10 oz bottles so I used the above recommendation from Lubegard.

I have a heated garage and my truck would very rarely be left outside and never in the bitter cold so I will run the Redline 5W30 year around. I was running PUP 0W40 year around before this. To me most people will run cheap 5W20 dino oil that the dealer put in and 5W30 Synthetic should flow better than that in the cold.

Do you have hemi tick? If you had hemi tick you would know it, as bad as it is piston slap sounds worse, you would freak'n know it, but it is just a bad noise as opposed to being dangerous compared to hemi tick. If I lived in Canada and I was on a redline strategy I would be using 0w30 even looks better in the cold new formula and a rp 20-820 and nothing else. Now, we do need a uoa to verify the formula, I am just considering viscosity. If you don't have hemi tick, for sure just use your m1 up. Personally, I also like stocking oil, at anytime I have 4 cases stored, so if you can store that stuff, redline oils have no shelf life they never degrade per dave.,

yeah this for sure, good strategy. However, you might want to save more money and run kirkland oils, search pqia plus kirkland oils, every bit as good as m1 in those weights. In zero winter rated oils I do like m1. peace

Yeah, the M1 5w20 I have is about a year old so I definitely wanna use it up. Great time to do it. In that case I won't worry about what this might do to the additives that the RL oil leaves inside the engine for protection since the lubetech will be my new protection. No, I don't have the hemi tick for sure. When the engine is warm, it is really quiet. I should actually take a video of how it sounds with the hood up too. at 63k miles, it honestly purrs at normal warm temp.

I will go off of their directions and use the 20 oz. Looks like I will have to buy a pack of 12 (10oz) because they only have one left on Amazon. f*** sakes lol.

Edit* I found a 6 pack instead so that will be nice not to have to even worry about finding stock of it though it's not like the RP filters. Wish it wasn't so difficult to find those.

Piston slap sounds like clattering when you start the engine, since all 8 piston skirts rattle against the cylinder bores. You'll know it!

I'm off deer hunting this weekend with temps forecast 20 degrees F for high and 5 degrees for low, and I haven't switched out my 5W-30 yet to 0W-30. But we get down to -30 F routinely in winter so, I'll change when I get back. I haven't heard piston slap yet with 5W-30, but I'm not taking chances from Hemi395's experiences.

Yep, exactly. cheap insurance to go with 0W-30 RL in your case as you already know. Next year i will look for some 0w-30 Kirkland I think. In my case, i don't put more than 6k miles in a year so every 6 months changing oil with 0w30 going forward in winter and 5w30 in summer would probably work out great.

I just found some 5w30 PUP oil (just 1 quart) in my garage from last year and my snow thrower needs an oil change. Score! haha

BTW, I sent an e-mail and left a voicemail to RP direct requesting a restock timeframe or if 20-820 is being discontinued. Not sure if anyone else may already know that answer and if there is a superseded PN.

So this normal price redline is 83 bucks for 6, valvoline 6 pack synthetic is on sale at 51 dollars. So I see some crazy prices on redline, it seams to be a vendor thing. Now nick is at 104 bucks for at least 7 quarts, not sure why the number of qts arent listed. He is pretty close to amazons 14 bucks per qt. It is the crazy prices that are throwing us off, before the latest inflation redline was 12-12.95 all day long, prices are only up a buck or two from that. That valvoline list price is 65 bucks. Mobil 1 is 43 bucks a 6 pack only at costco, it is 56 for a 6 pack amazon. Pup 0w40 7qrt 62. Pup 5 qrts are 32 amazon pricing, that is up from 26 posted a bunch of time last year.

I am looking at all these options and current pricing, redline isn't that much out of line. I honetly have not been pricing oils in general since the inflation, prices are up everywhere.

I have to say kirkland is looking better and better, despite a 5 dollar increase you still get two 5 qrt jugs for 39.99.

I too have been following the prices closely of redline. I got it when it was $145 for 12 quarts. Stocked up then, good thing. Been following PUP 5w30 also for my wife's Durango. In fact cannot find the 5w30 on Amazon(looked just now) so I stocked up on some from Walmart. I had the PUP 5w30 setup as a sub and save and got an email the other day that subscription was canceled. Noticed that when stock runs out on Amazon Walmart does also a short time after. Noticed that with other items.

When I got my exhaust done at a muffler shop months back he said stock up on Oil as stock is declining and prices are increasing. Boy was he ever right.

I linked a short video of my engine sound.

63k miles with 5w30 (30f outside) Redline and 20-820 filter after 3k miles on current oil/filter.

I notice what sounds kinda more like sticky valve or noise valve sound in general. Almost reminds me of Yamaha motorcycle valve noise but at different pitch and speed due to pretty low idle. Is this normal cause I don't know? Judging by the fact the noise is definitely louder down low and sounds like it's coming from exhaust manifold area, I'm betting that's where it's coming from. I need to get under and see if any bolts are loose. Weird thing is it doesn't make any louder noise when cold.

A good cold weather mobil 1 oil would be m1 ep 0w20 and m1 esp x2 0w20. Those are the best 2 if you were sticking to mobil 1. I like esp x2 more than ep as you get esters with the esp x2. Another good option is esp 0w30 but im sure any mobil 1 5w20 would be fine as well

Butter smooth, there is zero there man. Just a situation where the noise in the forum effected your ear, happens a lot and is the unfortunate side effect of so many hemi's having this issue. That ram sounds great, have you ever done a uoa?
