So yesterday. It was about 45* OUTSIDE. My Dodge truck is a D250 Diesel . with 365000 miles on it.
It's a really nice Pick-up yet. I bought it at 165000 mile with the Injection pump out on it .
So I had a rebuilt injection pump put on it . It has had the fuel filter changed once a year , along with it's other maintenance .. WHICH IS ABOUT ONCE EVERY 5000 MILES.
BUT WHEN IT started up yesterday I was blowing White smoke out the exhaust .. I went ahead & Drove it out my Driveway . & Turned it around at the mail box & drove it bad to the house.
I even wondered if it was going to make it back to my house .. It had no throttle response .
It did not set the check engine light .
It's had about 3 Lift Pumps put on it .. I'm sorry I don't like the new in-tank Lift pumps .. SO I just put the original style of lift pump back on the Block Side. This pump most likely has about has got 50K ON IT.
I Worked for Dodge dealership for 10 years when I bought this truck. I was a service advisor..
We worked on 100 diesel pickup a week ... So I've seen a lot of Diesels.
But it's been12+ years since I worked there. & I cant remember what We'd have called this issue.
Later that same day I came back & cranked my pick-up & it ran perfect .. No miss or no White smoke .
SO WHAT Do you think it was when my truck did this Bad smoking issue.
..... I would think an injector . But how could an injector correct itself.

Could be head gasket, injector if they are originals... Did you check coolant level, see if coolant is in oil or oil in radiator?

Should of smelled the smoke and if it made your eyes water and smelled like fuel you many have had an injector hang open.

Yes I got out& walked into the White Smoke .. & Yes it smell like fuel & Not oil .
COOLANT in radiator is full & correct color. & Oil was only about a half qt low. & Truck is due it's 5000 k mile oil change.
... On another web sight a fellow member who sure has lots of good answers. He said.. it may have had the grid heater not work at all . & It cranked withnot heat to the fuel . & Yes that made it kick out unheated FUEL.
...
......WONDER WHAT Would keep it from doing that again.
But as the Truck sat there & cooled back off to cold temps . The next Time I cranked it hat day I believe I let the Wait to start light run it's 20 second time heat cycle & The truck cranked & ran great.
...........
....I'd sure like to have a new set of new Injectors , but I hate to just put in $800.00 worth of new injectors. & Have a $200.00 bill to install them. .
& Only help my mileage from about .15.7 up to maybe 18.5 r 19.mpg.
It take a lot of miles to pay for that Injector replacements.

I had this happen with my 2000 a few years ago. Only difference is mine ran just fine.... maybe slightly sluggish response at low rpm. Mine was an injector. I had them tested at a local shop. I was told one was not spraying correctly. It actually put a couple of quarts of fuel in the crankcase as well. Check the dipstick and make sure it has not went over full.

I see your in TX so I have doubts the grid heater not fully cycling had anything to do with the white smoke, the reason I say that is I have done a few very cold start up in my old 2006 5.9 CTD between -20 & -27 below zero without lettings grid heater run a heat cycle and did so without any white smoke coming out of the exhaust system. Agree with RacerRon to have injectors tested by a reputable diesel shop to find out if maybe you only have a single bad injector, its also a good idea to run some injector cleaner in your fuel...
