Hi everyone, new to the forum, new to Ram, and first post. I'm a car audio noob so bear with me. I have a 2017 Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 5" Uconnect screen and 6-speaker setup. If I want to add a sub and upgrade speakers, while retaining the stock head unit, what would I all need to add? I don't need anything insane, just want some a decent upgrade. Thinking a 10" sub would be sufficient seeing as the stock 8" sub I've heard in other Rams seems to be pretty decent.

Or is it even worth trying to work with the OEM head unit?

The Ram Kicker upgrade speakers are an easy plug and play upgrade. There was a sub upgrade too but I'm not sure if they still make it.

you will want a t harness to tie in a amp to add all that. honestly the speakers arent terrible in mine just needs a sub. you have a enough room behind the seat for a shallow mount which would be what id do as i dont want the stuff in my way. are you wanting to amp all your speakers or just drop in replacements and add a sub? building your own box or some prefab unit? really once you answer that you can be steered right.

I'm thinking of just doing drop-in replacements for the speakers and adding a sub. I never knew you could fit a shallow mount behind the seat.

I've never dabbled in audio before, so I might try building my own just seeing the cost of some pre-fab ones, haha.

There are a couple of OEM subs in the OEM box for sale on Facebook that I can grab for a good deal (I'd need to add an amp). How is the stock 8" for quality?

If you’re a noob as you say in audio, do yourself and your ears a favor and have an expert build your system. It’s not as easy as just dropping in some speakers and building a sub box with an amp. So many factors go into a sub box as well as speakers and amps. It will save you money in the long run as well. I really hate when someone asks me to fix the system they “built”.

If you buy the box and upgrade the speaker it sounds pretty good. I did the same

Looks like a sweet system, but that's about 5x the max I'd want to spend

If I'm just looking at speaker/tweeter upgrades from Crutchfield to work with my factory head unit (let's assume no sub for now), what kind of specs should I be looking for? The "frequency response, 100 watts RMS, 300 watts peak power, sensitivity" etc. are all sort of Greek to me.

Several years ago I ordered the Kicker Ram set off of Amazon and replaced all 6 speakers. Installed resistors on the dash speakers and the difference was night and day. Well worth it. Then I added an aftermarket 10”powered sub behind the rear seat. Very pleased with the end result.

i am in process of reviewing a speaker upgrade to better than the Alpine quality as I have the 7 speaker stock junk. I went to 3 different shops and talked to them so I think I am going with a Kenwood system.
it sounds nice and the shop actually took me for a drive around the block in the owners Ram, played a few tunes just so i hear it in the confines of a truck. I think it made the difference in my choice

Highly recommend the Kicker upgrade for the non Alpine system, that's what I did and I'm very happy with the stock headunit and the kicker speakers in my 15 crew cab.

Look at the same Focal set I put in my truck. I started with just the six speaker upgrade and it was fantastic. The detail and clarity was great, as was the bass response with the speakers in the front doors. The factory head unit powered them very well, and the volume appreciably increased with just the speakers. At full volume on the U-Connect (38) there was zero distortion and full punch was there with great highs and mids too. The speakers and professional installation were just under $1K CDN.

EDIT - I also had sound-mat installed in all the doors as well when the speakers were installed, in that cost. It makes a huge improvement to the sound as well as helping to address rattles, etc.
