I am in a rental car 2 weeks out of every month for work travel and I really like Apple CarPlay…My Ram is a ‘17 SLT. My oem radio is a 5” touchscreen with Uconnect, bluetooth. All I get is voice commands from Google Maps but only if Im playing media from my iPhone and even then no volume control btw media and guidance. I’d love to upgrade it to a 8.4 but that is really expensive and I honestly would prefer extra funds to go toward performance and suspension upgrades. All I want is CarPlay. Is there a direct oem swap 5” for 5” that would get me CarPlay? Im not messing with aftermarket head units either.
Thanks!

Apple CarPlay/ is on 2018+ 8.4in only. Even if you swap to 5" you won't have it.

total cost for me to go from 5"in to 8.4 with AA/CP was
$600 for radio
$85 for Bezel
$325 for conversion harness
optional
$100 for steering wheel controls and cover

@ThunderMug95 I didn’t have a mic I bought my 5.0 from @Athlium I ordered the mics and harness from @Mpgrimm2 also the camera reroute harness to put the backup camera on the radio I gave 150 including shipping all I was looking to gain was the hands free and Bluetooth to play my music.2017 is the year the factory put the mics in the headliner .

Where did you buy the parts from at those prices?

To get CarPlay, as others have said, it's either an 8.4", or an aftermarket. No way to add AA/CP to the 5". Unless FCA adds it to a 5th gen 5" that "fits" the 4th as well, but I don't see them doing that. The "dongles" all use the existing capabilities of the head unit. Some just act as a wireless cable, while some can "pervert" the function, to do things you probably shouldn't be doing while driving. (Watching streaming video/full phone mirror)

Interested to hear the workaround on this; I'm in a similar situation with my 2014 Tradesman. I'm new to Ram modification.

I've had some issues trying to get the 8.4 radio, especially something under a grand. The 2018 classic is what is compatible with the 4th gen series, right? I'm trying to do the same thing so I can reinstate the mirror mics and get a volume knob again... but also have Apple CarPlay.
