Wife has inherited 5.7 2012 Ram Laramie Longhorn with under 20k miles. I am wanting to do a full MDS delete but was wondering if dodge uses low tension piston rings like all other manufacturers. I can only assume they do. Local dealer not much help. If i am to do a delete I feel it to be wise to replace rings while heads are off. Anyone have any experience with this? Are original rings OK to use? If i replace anyone have any recommendations?

Why are you wanting to change the rings? I’m not really understanding that. Unless you are planning on doing a full rebuild I wouldn’t even worry about the piston rings.

Hemis do not have piston ring issues like gm did with low tension BS 220k on my orig rings dont burn that much oil.

I have a lot of experience with many auto manufacturers(working as a dealer tech for over 35 years) but not with dodge. So many use the low tension bs. As mileage add up so will oil consumption. I’ve researched that even just tuning out mds there is still the risk of lifter failure which leads to camshaft damage. I personally will want a complete delete. Since heads are off I’ll kill two birds with one stone and replace exhaust manifolds with a set of BBS shorty headers I’ve purchased. Thanks for the info on the rings. Much appreciated

I just completed a full rebuild, MDS delete, All of the "hellcat" upgrades, 110k miles and piston rings looked perfect. I personally think its not a lifter but a camshaft hardening issue. I bought the Texas Speed MDS delete kit and used this forum for any issues or upgrades.

Are you planning on boosting it,or hitting it with a 200 shot of nitrous, then it's beneficial to open up the stock ring gaps,if not then there's not much to worry about.

Good to hear about the rings! No leaving it stock. It’s the wife’s truck. (Believe me I’d love to!)
It has sentimental value to her since it was her brother’s truck who passed. Just want to make her truck reliable. My toy is an 91 c2500 454. Did use the Ram to tow my compact John Deere. Very impressed with the torque!

Of all the issues one hears on this site, piston ring problems have to be extremely rare, if not nearly non-existent, even on high mileage engines.

From what I've read, some GM engines use piston ring pressures down to two pounds. Based on discussions with Ram techs., the 5.7s used a piston ring pressure between 8-10 pounds, although that information may be somewhat dated. This would probably put Hemi engines on the very high end of current industry standards.

Use the existing rings. More than likely not even broken in yet with that mileage. Try something like the Edge Pulsar on ecm which gives you the option to turn MDS off in 4 set points. Plus with premium fuel in perf mode with mds off you will definitly have a smile on your face!

Could also put shift into manual which turns mds off. Just have to do it after each restart.
