Well, this really sucks! I love my running boards but the place where they bolt to is way under designed! The boards and brackets are beefy enough, but the body where they bolt to is not. I'm going to have to do a little modifying to fix this issue.View attachment 485279
Yup. That’s why my home made running boards bolt to the pinch weld as well. 6 points of contact on each board. 12 bolts per board. I’ve bottomed out on them once so far and no damage to the truck or the steps. They are solid built. 2” main rail and 1-1/2” tubing with 1” square tube from the main rail to the inside mounts. The rocker panel will have to rip off. Only problem is this version 1 is not wheel to wheel. Version 2 will either be the same setup but wheel to wheel or full on rock sliders frame mounted with an integrated full belly pan.

I got the exhaust fan hooked up and it’s not the best, but it draws air out and should help some. Hard pipe would be better and flow more CFM's. I tried the filter fit and they will work, just need to seal them better when the time comes. I'm going to do the bed cover first to do my trial (and hopefully no error) run at it. It came ready to paint so it need very little work.

I cleaned the cover and wet sanded twice with 800. I was going to lay down the finish without priming. While I was wiping it down, I noticed some waves in the reflection so I wiped it down with wax cleaner/remover and primed it. I'm going to guide coat and block sand it to give it a smoother look. I used the 1.7 tip although I think I'll try some added reducer and maybe the 2.0 tip next time around. Maybe even bump the pressure up from 26 psi. It did not spay as well as I expected. The exhaust fan set up worked great and kept the odor from migrating throughout the rest of the house.

I was able to get the lid sanded and lay down 2 coats. I was surprised at how well the first coat covered but went with 2 anyways. I love the color as it looks like straight Black until you get close to it, then the metallic pops. Looks good to me for a first time rookie! I can't wait to see it when I lay down the 2 Metallic Gold Racing stripes.

Take your time and don't rush the paint job. It looks good, can't wait to see the whole TRX kit transformation finished

Any updates since the bed cover was painted? Working towards getting the trx kit in the next year. Probably doing a level with wheels and tires now and start saving money and time off to complete the kit installation.

I'm just getting over a 3 week battle with Covid so I've been out of commission. I've got about 2-3 months before I might be able to take a week off to hopefully complete it. If not, I'll have to do it like when I rebuilt the motor & swapped out the transmission & transfer case. Park it and work on weekends and use the wife ride during the week. Either way I want to take my time with it and do it right. Good luck with yours and don't hesitate to contact me on some tips for the install.

Well, a little over a year later, I finally got some time off to continue the painting. With some luck maybe I'll get the front clip done by this weekend. I'm just going to have to do this a section at a time. The pictures don't do it justice because of the way the lights are filtered. I lined the ceiling with visqueen to keep partials from falling from the acoustical ceiling. Tomorrow I'll lay the stripes down

Stripes are on the hood. It's not a functional hood so I stopped the stripes at the rear louvers and blacked out the non functional intake. I just thought it would look better and to me it does. I'm prepping the front grill, bumper cover and fenders and hope to shoot some paint on those tomorrow.Paint Front 9.jpgPaint Front 8.jpgPaint Front 7.jpgPaint Front 6.jpgPaint Front 5.jpg

Looking great! Any plans for a smaller wheel bigger tire setup in the future?
Thanks! I've thought about it and need to do some research on it. The problem is the tire wells on the kit are made for up to 37"+ tires and the Nitto's fit great. They are just so $$$ and are rated up to 100 MPH. It's a 4x4 so they kind of fit the theme. If I could save some $$$, get a higher MPH rating, get a set that would look good and fit the 4x4 set up on stock suspension set up, I might consider it. Currently the wheels are 9"x20" up front with 37"x11.5" tires and the rears are 12"x20' wheels with 37"x13.5" tires. My next move I'm considering is swapping the 3.21 gears out for 3.92's to help ease up the torque torture on the drive train with the larger tires.
