Hey all, just bought my first RAM, a 2022 1500 Laramie nearly fully loaded and so far I'm loving it. I have never owned a RAM or any other MOPAR product and am curious if these trucks have any issues I should keep an eye on. A RAM sales guy I know, not the one I bought from, told me that the rear brake light housing seals will leak and that the sunroof drains will clog and cause leaks. I am going to keep tabs on these. I was also considering the MAX CARE Extended Warranty for $2850 but after reading through this forum am no closer to knowing if they are worth it or not. Any advice on what else to keep an eye on, any maintenance issues, problems, or preventitive steps I can take to make this thing run trouble free for 250,000 miles?

Zeigler is the warranty dealer I have been shopping against others and seems to have the best price out there.

Also curious about adding some LED front and rear light mods, anyone have any suggestions on those?

Thanks!!!

@DylanStanRam welcome to RamForum. Is your truck a 2022 Classic or new 5th Gen (I ask because if it's 5th gen I'll move thread into that section.

As far as extended warranties are concerned, you'll get strong opinions on both sides. That said, Zeigler is a very reputable dealer and many members have purchased their warranties through them.

Oh I thought I started it in the 5th Gen thread, it is indeed 5th Gen. Thanks for the feedback regarding Ziegler!

Some issues are more common than others but it varies by truck. I would not worry about anything until you notice something.

Use Top Tier gas, use quality fluids at the required service intervals, and enjoy your ride.

I'm a proponent of the ESP. My truck had 10 "visits" to the dealership during the basic warranty and 2 (so far) under my ESP (Mopar MaxCare). Between the last two visits I'm pretty sure the ESP has paid for itself (even with the $200 I paid in deductibles).

These trucks are very intricate and loaded with expensive electronics. Add the fact that I drive 20K+ miles a year and my basic warranty was up around 19 months. Getting the 7 year / unlimited miles ESP was a no-brainer for me since that gives me an extra 5 1/2 years of coverage. It may not cover the smaller stuff but it covers all the big ticket items like computer modules, engine, and drivetrain.

There are some loopholes that dealerships might try to squeeze through but as a middle-aged dude with an unmodified truck it's pretty easy money for them ($100 from me and the rest from corporate). Some of the things they didn't want to do under the basic warranty they took care of under the ESP. YMMV

That's not unique to Ram. My F150 did the same thing. Toward the end of my time with it, every time it rained my drivers side tail light looked like a fish bowl. The third brake light seal would leak too. Every two years or so the sunroof drain lines would get clogged with dirt, flood the interior, and I'd have to clean them out.

Regarding ESP or Max Care Warranty.
Think of it like Life Insurance.

If you have enough money that your family will be provided for, until they die,
should you die prematurely, then you really do not need Life Insurance.

If you do not have enough money, then Life insurance is a good idea.

Just like Life Insurance, I hope I never use my Warranty and the cost of it was a total waste.
I should be so lucky because that means my truck never had any issues and gave me perfect performance.

I have always purchased waranties for every car the Wife owned. Never my own, until these last 2 1/2 tons.
My Job I travelled for work and rather enjoyed not having to listen to an upset, angry Wife because her car broke down.

When it did, and they all do, she'd take it to the Dealer,
get her rental, usually the exact same car she drove and on her merry way she went.

When her car was done, she only had to cover the cost of her deductible.

Being able to write a $10K check does not make it anymore palatable.
Writing a $100 check is nothing to darn near everyone.

My last 2 1/2 tons, I purchased the warranty for myself.

Again, I can probably afford to pay whatever bill may arise.

Can afford to buy a new truck,, just like the one I just bought
but, and this is most important, I do not want to.

My 3/4 tons never gave me any issues.
1/2 tons have, but nothing that was not covered.

what to look out for?

Leaking 3rd brake light, same as every other truck.

Leaking sunroof cause drains are plugged. Again, same as every sunroof, ever made.

Lifter failure that scores cam shaft.
usually covered under the 100K Emission warranty but , sometimes, it does not happen until many miles later.
Which , if you think about it, 150K miles with no problems is a good thing.

Ram really has no more, or no less, issues than anybody else.
I had a failed lifter and camshaft that had to be replaced, swore I;d never buy another and been fanboy my entire Life.
Guess what? I bought another.

Looked around, drove some diferent makes and models but really wanted a powerful v_8 , not a souped up Mouse Motor.
Got one of those is my Wife's Explorer St.

It's fun but I do not trust it go to the distance, specially if it is being worked to death towing the boat or camper.
Thought long and hard about a 3/4 ton Chevy Diesel but.....
Hemi, Man,

It's a HEMI

I'm hoping they made some improvements over the years and you have many trouble free years of ownership.

There are tons of these trucks on the road.

'15 Express. Really nice truck. Rides nice, sharp looking truck, paint holding up nice too, but had its problems over the years. No brand is perfect. They all have their problems.

Had the leak at the third brake light. My daughter wouldn't have even noticed it if it weren't for the emergency jumper pack that was stored in the underseat cubbie. She kept hearing a low beeping sound and found the cubbies under the seat were full of water.
Easy fix.

This truck also had many, many factory recalls. They were free, but still a hassle bringing the truck into the dealer.

The fuel sender went bad out of warranty, which meant the whole fuel pump/sender unit needed replacement at a cost of $900.

This truck had the 5.7L Hemi tick which wiped out the cam, a $7,000+ repair. Engine was pulled and rebuilt.

The Uconnect unit died. I replaced it with an aftermarket unit which was better and less expensive.

It didn't have the cabin filter. We added it with the kit.

The rear seat is a full bench, not 60/40, so if you have a child car seat installed in one spot, you can't lift the seat.

I will say that this crew cab is cavernous. Huge amount of room in the back.

Good luck and enjoy your new ride.

The UConnect system is a bit wonky. It's one of the biggest complaints. It's the thing that dropped Ram to the bottom of the JD Power reliability list. So, if you see that JD Power thing with Ram listed as problematic (it pops up now and again with people saying "see, Ram sucks"), know that it's due primarily to dumb stereo problems. If you have the 12" display....good luck with that.

If you have the Alpine 9-speaker system, they aren't actual Alpine speakers. The system was designed by Alpine, but the speakers are generic. Most people swap out the speakers with Infinity Reference. Makes a huge difference.
