But the factory o-ring gasket is a far better way to seal a pan Ian.No new manufacture'r uses a cork gasket anymore,so i'm not sure why Holley decided to not mill the groove required to re-use the factory o-ring,if PPE can mill the groove and they're a relatively small company compared to the Holley empire,i'm pretty sure Holley could of milled a groove toMy Mag-Hytec trans pan came with a corck gasket. never leaked in 5 years it was on.
Yea i'm not so sure if it'd be an ideal pan out in the bushes,as it looks like it hangs down to the level of the transmission crossmember.I think you'd definitely want a skid plate under it,if you are hard core 4X4'ing.If it came down to it,you could space the skid plate down with washers or a spacer of some sortlooks to deep for off-roading and my skid plates
Jesse Hell Raiser has a stock depth pan,but i haven't been able to track much info down on it.I just wanted a stock capacity pan anyway but PPE wouldn't confirm that any of their other pans would fit.
The PPE and B&M pan have a replaceable filter, and i think some of the cheaper aftermarket composite pans have a replaceable filterWhy is the filter part of the pan anyway? Can't someone make it separate?
Did I miss something on the holley page? Where would you get a replacement filter for that B&M pan?The PPE and B&M pan have a replaceable filter, and i think some of the cheaper aftermarket composite pans have a replaceable filter
Well crap! My 8 speed must be bad then! It usually hits ~190 around the same time as the oil. Maybe a little slower. But over my 30ish mile commute to work during rush hour on the "highway", all 3 fluids hit around 200. Running empty on my 5.7I'm guessing you've never experienced the thickness of the factory ZF fluid, water is damn near thicker then the factory fluid.I highly doubt there'd be a measurable differance in the milege by dropping the fluid temperature 5 to 10 degrees. But there's probably a measurable differance in the life of the transmission. Point being the HD trucks with the 8 speed hardly ever get over 170F while towing 7,000+lbs,they seem to run more in the 165 to 168 range, while the 1500's will run on average 20 degrees hotter,so their must be a reason the HD's run cooler, and i'm guessing it has more to do with keeping the 8 speed alive. I know the PPE pan pulled close to 5 degrees out of my 8 speeds operating temp,so i would think this pan would do the same or more, and i couldn't see any change in the trucks milege,in fact i can't even see any measurable change in milege on a 500 mile trip, with the transmission running at 140 which is where it runs at now. Maybe over a 100,000 miles you might see a bit of milege differance, but i even wonder about that.On a cool day (30 to 40F) and a easy drive,my wifes 6.4/8 speed Challenger will take well over 70 miles to even crest 120F on transmission temp, and i can still pull down 31/32mpg with it,basically the same milege it'll get with the transmission at 170 to 180F. If you do any towing i think this pan or the PPE pan are good investments, just for the fact you have more fluid volumne to absorb contaminents and heat spikes. You should buy this pan and report back on whether you see a milege drop,as right now this is all speculation, and you could be the one to try out your speculations
That's about normal on the 1500's,as they use coolant to heat the transmission fluid, the HD trucks and cars with the 8 speeds don't pre-heat the transmission fluid with coolant. The only ones heating the 8 speeds transmission fluid are the 1500's.Well crap! That would explain it! It did seem odd that the tranny got warm so much faster than the oil. That's about normal on the 1500's,as they use coolant to heat the transmission fluid, the HD trucks and cars with the 8 speeds don't pre-heat the transmission fluid with coolant. The only ones heating the 8 speeds transmission fluid are the 1500's.
Crazy how much difference the shudders make on your temps. Mine generally settles around 140 to 145 on the highway.Current temps. Been driving for over an hour. Cruise control at 80mph. Just pulled off to the rest stop.
The ppe pan uses the stock transmission pan gasket instead of the cork gasket so it’s really easy to find a replacement gasket if needed.B&M Aluminum Transmission Pan RAM 1500 8HP70 8 Speed Auto
