Hey Guys,

Just looking for some input I have a 2008 Ram 1500 with the 4.7 in it. It just hit 152k (had truck since 90k) and runs good aside from a new P2098 code that just popped up. I’ve pinpointed it to be an exhaust gasket leak at the block however the exhaust studs are definitely going to be a pain to get out in one piece from the it’s life in the northeast. This is probably out of my personal ability to tackle and would involve me having a shop do it. Downside is this won’t pass inspection if I don’t and I would have to move on.

I was just wondering what you guys thought the life span on this truck is and if it’s worth it to sink the money into at 150k. I’ve read it going both ways on this forum with this engine. The body is in great shape, but the other thing that will pop up in the next few years would be the oil pan rusting out as the rust is increasing.

Thanks for the input in advance.

Personal preference.
If you can swing a newer truck payment and think you need a newer truck, I say go for it. Go with your gut. It is usually correct 100% of the time.

Good luck either way!

@ShiftMX527 the way I look at it, every month I can stay with my paid-off vehicle is a car payment worth of money saved. Am I willing to give up that monthly savings for a one-time visit to the mechanic shop? Usually I'd gladly pay several months of car payment worth on a single visit to the mechanic shop if it meant the rest of the year was back to normal savings. I've never had a car that cost nearly as much to repair as it was saving me every month.

Appreciate all the feedback guys! Yea I am definitely not someone who needs the latest and greatest and I certainly love not having the payment so I will probably at the least explore what the cost of this is going to look like.

Thanks!

My 2008 ran well over 200k they are good trucks the exhaust manifold issue is common not to bad of a job. Just remove both headers if bolts broken flush have someone with a welder weld the ends of bolts so you can spin them have done a bunch. You also dont need to buy new headers you can sand them flat again and they will never re warp I use a cheap harbor freight belt sander to fix manifolds.

415k miles on my ‘08 4.7 purchased new and it’s still my daily…run it hard and maintain it well should last a long time. Can’t comment on rust or the automatic transmission (mine is a 6spd in California).
