"Plug" in fuel intake?

Good evening. So I bought my used 2020 3500 a couple months ago... First truck, first diesel.

Sorry for the basic question but what is the purpose of the little red plug in the fuel intake?

Don't know anything about diesels but shouldn't your fuel cap be there? Looks like someone just lost it and threw a cap in there instead of replacing it.

My 2022 had the same red cap from the factory, I guess its to help keep dirt & junk out of the fuel inlet. Being fuel is so high I bought these locks to help keep others from pouring crap in my Def tank or stealing fuel easily.

As mentioned, it's a dust cover for the "capless" fuel filler opening.

Thanks everyone. I figured it was something basic. Interesting that I didn't have one in my capless Durango fuel opening.

I always get a rubber plumbing cap from the hardware store to use as a dust cover when I have a capless fuel inlet. Spending a lot of time in dusty conditions, I don’t want that in my tank.

Capless is a bad idea IMO.

Capless is a bad idea IMO.

Agreed. I live in a rural area that can go several weeks between rain showers in the summer months and things get very dusty. I'd prefer to have a fuel cap.
