I'm sure this has been discussed before, but didn't dig through all the threads.

Now that I finally got alfabod and programed new fobs for the the cost of the fob on Amazon, I want to setup my spare key.

I was thinking of putting the vallet key in my locking Hitch cap, and then putting the rest of the fob some where inside the cab. I was also thinking about putting the rest of the fob in the Air Filter housing. Do you think a small bag with the Key fob Taped to the top of the housing would cause any problems.

Or

Where do others hide their keys ( I won't ask for your address :) )

I'm always stressed when going backpacking or hiking that I will loose that key, I end up tieing to my pants, and have ocd about loosing it....

I don't know that I would keep the fob anywhere near the truck because as long as it's in range the functions of it may still be active. I just keep my fob on a carabiner hooked to my belt loop in on my pants.

Haven't done it yet, but I will probably get a locksmith to make a plain flat key that fits the door cylinder and hide that externally inside the frame or something. Maybe a spare fob in a Faraday bag ******* under the dash somewhere.

^^^ seriously " t i e d u p"? ^^^

I got a spare flat key and put it in a magnetic box under the lip of the bed at the back. Never falls out. Always near if needed. NAPA cheap.

Do NOT keep a live FOB in the truck. IF you do and someone breaks in, all they have to do is hit the start button to drive off. They don't need to find where you hid the FOB. If you want to keep the fob in the truck, take the battery out of it. This is not a guess, I tried it.

A flat key stored outside the vehicle will allow you to access the cab, then the FOB which you simply need to put the battery into. Lowes made me half a dozen flat keys for the truck and the Cherokee for $1.99 each. A far as putting the valet key into something that locks, unless it is a combination lock, you have the same issue with lost keys for that as you do for losing the FOB.

Other problem with keeping a live FOB in the truck is it also draws your battery down if it is sitting parked. The truck does not stay asleep properly. Again, I tried this by measuring battery voltage after 1 week then 2 weeks parked with no FOB and then 1 and 2 weeks parked with the FOB in the glove box. In warm weather it won't kill the battery but at -25, even one week will make starting borderline.

Forgot to mention I have a 2018 with out push to start, so it shouldn't effect the battery being drained inside the cab. I do have a combo lock on my hitch receiver cap, which is where I thought I would put the cut key ( valet key )

In that case I would suggest you lock the fob in there. Easier to break into the cab than the hitch lock, so the fob is safer locked in there than trying to hide it in the cab.

I had a key cut then cut ears off and taped in the wiring as only needed if I lost my keys or locked them in the truck

I will suggest that you buy a couple of FARADAY pouches or Cage, box.

If you don't want to waste money,
wrap your Spare FOB in aluminum foil, just remember to not toss it in the trash when Spring Cleaning
Your Spare FOB can be detected by thieves, up to 300 FEET !!!

Walmart has some Faraday pouches

high priced

I keep 4 sets of keys per car. Including fobs if they have them. Have had 4 kids and my wife and I. So that's 3 sets of keys per car between myself, wife and kid driver with a spare. Have keylock box at house hidden with all spares, and then we are backups to one another if we get locked out. Not as fast as having a hidden key on Car, but with kids also provides a learning lesson when you have to wait for someone to come help you. Amazing how fewer times we have losing keys....but not perfect. If anyone has seen a Faraday key lock box with lots of hooks for sale somewhere please send links....is a project I'm getting ready to do if I can't find a pre-made one.
