Was informed today that buddy's new Warlock has a 0W20 oil cap on it. Thought that was interesting considering the long discussed hemi oil threads.

That's crazy, here guys proof that even 5w20 is too thin and leads to hemi tick in many cases, FCA is going in opposite directions, without fixing existing hemis problems.

My 21 still calls for 5/20 like my 11 did. Both are quite. I dont think I'd put anything thinner in. 0/20 has the viscosity of apple juice. The same engine for years has had the oil requirements changed more than likely because of emissions reasons.

It's a v6 isn't it? The newer pentastar v6 have been calling for 0w20 for awhile. That is what our pacifica uses. Full synthetic 0w20. From a quick search even the new hemi still calls for 5w20

0w20 and 5w20 are almost identical, but yeah they are both thin. The bad news is coming though, it is a matter of time before they will put in 0w16 and that is 2 full points thinner. See the bottom two lines 0w20 and 5w20 white and yellow, they will likely operate the same at temp.

Depending on the formula, in many cases 0w20 can even be a better quality oil. if they use pao to achieve cold flow instead of vii's.

At least for the 1500's, they started calling for 0w 20 for the Hemi in 2022 models.

What does the manual say?

The 3.6L uses that oil - the cap might have been put on in error.

Like @Burla said, there's essentially no difference between 5w20 and 0w20. The 0w will pump a hair easier in extreme cold is about it.

While I respect Mr. Burla; he doesn't know everything ... strange but true.

Good article

C. Performance

Both 0W-20 and 5W-20 are thinner oil grades that perform best in low temperature winter climates.

0W-20 oil grade (due to its lower viscosity) is better with cold starts. It also prevents problems like sludge buildup, engine wear, varnish deposits, and low oil pressure. You can expect faster oil circulation with 0W-20 and a smoother flow.

So if you’re going to be driving a lot in below-freezing temperature climates and rarely drive in warmer temperature climates, 0W-20 oil grade would be ideal for you.

On the other hand, 5W-20 has a higher viscosity and performs slightly better in seasonal climates. It’s a slightly thicker oil and is more resistant to oil thinning at hotter temperatures.

Note: Some cars can take both 0W-20 and 5W-20 oil. But before you switch to a different viscosity grade, speak to your mechanic about the recommended oil for your car.

Its all a game…mpg numbers, service revenue and early replacement. Theres validity in the light weight oil during start up in colder climates. But at operating temps, that all goes out the window more or less. Until then, for me in my temperate climate quality 5w30 and regular intervals is the benchmark. I’d rather suffer the fraction of a mpg loss and keep my my motor purring 40k mi more. To each their own.

Yhea, they call them electric.
Welll, yeah there is that!
The wife unit is going to replace her ‘18 Terrain Denali AWD with one. Her work offers free charging stations. She is a die-hard GM fan…She may order the Blazer EV. I chuckled until I saw the horsepower stats…then I kinda got interested. My Ram gulps down enough melted dinosaurs for both of us.

Wife’s car calls for 0w20. It’s a 2013 Corolla. Her mothers car is a 2010 Corolla. Same oil. Parents 06 Corolla was 5w20. I ran 5w20 in the wife’s car a few times but actually notice the mpg drops about .5-1 mpg over the course of an oil change. Roughly 5,000 miles. Than again her car gets 30mpg average. Just did her oil change today. Used a Fram ultra synthetic filter like usual. Comes pink in the box with a wire cage inside. Still soft after 1yr/5000miles

random but you OP are you in the north or canada?
i wonder if they are recommending different grade oils in different climates.
i'm in canada when i bought my old 07 back in 08. the truck was a us truck and came from atlanta.
when winter started the truck took forever to get hot, id be like 30 minutes before the heater was blowing hot.
some investigation and it had a colder thermostat in it. switched it out to one that ran hotter (opposite of everyone in the performance groups) and the problem was solved.
im wondering if maybe ram is doing something similar with oils?

ps. that was on the 3.7l v6

Thanks for sharing info and pics. It's amazing how visually dirty those filters get at "only" 5,000 miles run time. Then again, that might be a GDI engine. These load the oil with soot during rich burn regime since a direct fuel injector doesn't atomize the gasoline enough to burn completely instantly @ only 60psi or so.

Diesels injecting @ 30,000 psi do the job. I'm surprised they've gotten gasoline direct injection pressure up that high - that's pretty dangerous owing to the -40 degree flash point (diesel is +125 degree F).

If they'd only use dual injectors (*sigh*).

No direct injection in this car. Still MPI. The oil is fairly dark but not quite jet black though. And the filter isn’t that bad. The picture makes it look darker. It was a very dark brown in person but it’s also a darker pink color when new so can’t really say on how “dirty” it is. It’s fairly close to the same color as the oil honestly.
