Never had one, but would be my first choice. Not much of a difference between the 6.2L and the 5.7L with regards to HP and torque so if I ever go THAT route, its going to be a diesel.

Diesel cost too much to maintain, so if you don't need the Torque for towing, why bother. My 2019 6.4L gas is 410hp. Plenty for towing the travel trailer. Lots of power when I need it. Rides a bit stiffer than a 1500, but its a Heavy Duty Truck. Never will see the fuel economy of the Eco D, though.

my 2020 RAM 2500 has had more issues than vehicle I have ever owned and I have owned vehicles since the early 70's including plenty in the early to mid 80's when cars really sucked.....that includes several harleys as well lol. Not sure what my next truck will be but it won't be a RAM.

I did what you're considering, though I had the 5.7 Hemi in my 1500. I went to 6.4 Hemi in my 2500. Best move I ever made, no regrets. No longer limited when I want to tow or load heavy. I think it was my model year 2017 they switched from leaf springs to 5 link coil spring on the rear and it rides much better than the dump truck suspensions of yore. Still not a cushy box, mind you, but tolerable.

Generally, guys move to Cummins if towing over 10,000 lbs.

I have a 2021 Laramie gas and a 1996 2500 V10. I really liked the old truck and in 165,000 miles it has never needed a major repair, pretty much just regular maintenance. Motor still purrs and burns no oil between 12,000 mile oil changes. This new one is much plusher ride, better interior, about 40% better gas mileage and I love the 4 door CC. Only has 9000 miles on it, most of them from hunting, but so far it has been perfect.

Haven't had any problems with my 16 2500 6.4 with 119k. 3100lbs payload capacity and 13,000lbs towing which is plenty for my uses. This is my first heavy duty truck and after having it I'll never go back to a half ton.

The 2500s switched to rear coils in 2014.

Although the 5.7 and 6.4 are close in power the block and internals of the 6.4 are a lot stronger from what I've researched.

I have a ‘21 2500, 6.4 with 4.10’s. It’s a beast and has never given me a problem in the 18 months I’ve owned it. That includes two 7,500 miles trips pulling a 5W out west. There is a huge difference in the feel and handling from a 1500, IMO.
It’s a big, heavy truck but gives you the feeling of driving a very capable truck that can do about anything.

Thinking about moving up to the Ram 2500 .
Why are you thinking of upgrading? If there is the need for the extra capacity of a 2500 then go for it. If you want a 2500 just because, the ride sucks compared to 1500 and they suck down a bunch more fuel.
A 1500 is a lot more capable than what a lot of the parrots on this forum will lead you to believe.

Thank you for all the replies . With the EcoDiesel , I tow my TT , weighs about 7k load it down . The truck seems to struggle a bit . Afraid to venture out of Florida with the travel trailer . At 74k lost the first EcoDiesel engine . Complete engine failure . Yes as stated , I love the ride of the 1500 Ram . Would like to go for reliability . Seems from the feedback , stepping up to the 2500 diesel or gas
would be an option . Thanks for infor .

Must have been an issue with that engine, I've had in the mid 8K lbs behind mine and walks down the freeway with ease.
If you haven't towed with a gasser yet, you might get apprehensive about the rpms the engine will spin. It's torque that pulls a trailer not horsepower, any of the gassers produce their torque up around 4K rpms where as the EcoDiesel is down around 2K rpms.
If you go the 2500 gasser route it's advisable to look '19 or newer to get the 8 spd behind the 6.4. As for the axle gearing 3.73 is fine unless you plan on towing heavy, will be in the mountains a lot or plan on bigger tires then go 4.10.

In 2009 I got my first 2500, after years of owning W150 Dodges(77-89) and a 1998 1500.

It was a 1999 Dodge RAM 2500 with the V10. I then bought my second...a 1985 W250. Then got a 2003 2500.I sold the 85 because,well,I am stupid, but still have the 99 and 03.

I bought a 2015 shortly after having a 2013 with a Cummins...I like my gas Mopars. The 2015 has 168k miles. All I have done is a wheel bearing. The 99 has 235k miles...it is waiting for my son and I to make new again...but starts up and drives whenever we want. The 03 has 145k on it...it is the wife's,but she lets me drive it ..haha.

I will not go back to a 1500. I have been bit by the crew cab 8 foot bed and it is not releasing it's bite

HeftyDuty for life:peace:

One other thing I will add, despite the relatively poor gas mileage compared to my other vehicles, I find the 2500 pickup far and away the most comfortable for long distance travel, and so does my wife. You also can't beat a fully rigged 2500 with winch, chains, recovery gear etc for travel in bad and winter conditions. They will go through weather nothing else will come close to overcoming.

My first choice is a 3500 ( Not Dually ) 6 speed manual Cummins :head3:

Those are the most bad ass Rams around. If my Dad could hurry up and sell it to me that would be great.

I'd agree with that statement.

But with that being said, they all do have their limitations. So if there's a need to upgrade I would. But be prepared to spend top coin. Our Ram can tow 10K but I'd never pull that much. So if you are having a decent size travel trailer I'd upgrade.
