How long ago did it start giving the cylinder 3 code? When mine went out, it chewed the lobe up on the cam, but that thing looks like it has been grinding away for quite some time. Not hard to figure that you need a new engine, as much material as that ground away, it's likely in every rotating part.
3 weeks ago. Started up one morning with a tick that went away a quarter mile down the road. Had the random ding. Checked the code and cylinder 3 misfire. No noise associated with it. Had it checked out, new plugs, swapped coil, level 2 diagnostic on ignition and injectors showing all in order. Pulled the valve cover and sure enough the number 3 intake valve was seen to not be lifting like the others. Hunted around for garages to get it in for cam and lifters. Got on a 2 week waitlist for a garage that could do it. In the meantime I kept driving it because no noise or grinding. Thought it may have been a collapsed lifter as opposed to what it actually turned out to be.

Possibly a myth, but I've read from many different sources 2011 5.7 engines seem to be the most problematic.
Sit tight.... the 6.4s are aging and I'm starting to see failures pop up on here. Mine went at 120K with perfect maintenance and a really easy life - <5% miles towing, daily driver pretty balanced between city and highway.

I'll add ME TOO to this post, bad lifter ticking at 120k for me. Didn't feel like dealing with lifters swap or pumping money into the new engine, so got a new truck now. Not a Ram as didn't want to experience this lifters Bs again

No brand is perfect. Every brand has its problems.

Look at the Ford Triton engines. They were spitting out spark plugs and Ford did nothing to help it's customers. You were on your own and it wasn't a rare or random occurrence either. You're driving along and pow, a spark plug shoots out taking the coil pack with it and your engine sounds like an air compressor. If it's a van, good luck getting in there to drill and install a heli-coil.

At least the lifter/cam problem of the 5.7 doesn't happen that often and the tick is a pre-warning. But for all of us that had to deal with it, that sucks. If you have no knowledge of what that tick is indicating, you can end up with a big repair bill.

I guess we just "roll the dice" when it comes to ownership.
So true!!! These members that post they switched brands...good luck. I will say this. We have a ton of fleet cars, Phord and Dodge. Guess which brand continues to have catastrophic engine failures UNDER 100k miles? Phords by far!!!! Burning oil (ecoboosts). SEVERAL now. I can honestly say I know of ZERO Chargers to seize running like so many of the phords. This is a large sample size. Phord after Phord smoking out the tailpipes, bad torque converters, rusting within just a few years, plastics breaking in a couple of years, etc. Yes I'm biased but I'm being honest here. The Chargers have needed some repair but just keep going. Funny, the 3.5 Chargers are the ones that absolutely won't die.

Ive owned pretty much every brand myself. They all suck.

HEMIs are by far the easiest ones to work on, and If you are on these forums there zero excuses to not delete MDS , Use proper oils and having your truck tuned.

Heading back to the Shop today to work on my Daughters GM, Need to do an HP Tuner data log as I believe there's a bad injector and test the OHMS resistance on the plugs. I also need to Give the wifes JK a once over before her long X-Mas trip.

When mine went out, it started as a random miss, so I changed the plugs, still had the miss. Changed the coil on that cylinder, still had the miss. Had a mechanic check it out and he did a internet search and discovered a lot of info about cam and lifter failure. RamCares repaired mine for 10% copay. No trouble with it since then. The lobe on my cam was not anywhere near what yours looked like. I don't know why you weren't having misfire and lurching when it acted up. Mine eventually would do it under normal driving conditions.

Yeah, I was surprised to see the extent of the damage. At idle you'd have thought it was just a great running engine so did the garage until they got it stripped down. I had the chime going off and some hesitation other than that it was not driving severely.

Bought 2018 ram limited 1500 5.7 .15000 miles , At 17000 bad misfire . 3 different Dealerships said it was supposed to run like that because of transmission. Been to 3 different Dealerships for a total of 12 times. They won't do anything because it won't show a code . Had another Hemi shop check it out ,said I am giving the runaround because they don't want to fool with it. Dodge cares told me they would not do anything to find a dealership that would fix it after I drive the hell out of it to cause it to break. Shavings in oil pan

That's out of warranty though, right?

If it runs that badly, did anyone from the dealership(s) ride with you to experience the issue?

Your previous post 2 months ago mentioned something about a warranty? That another shop would not touch it?

Not sure if there is any recourse, but something is not right, especially for a truck with only 17k miles.

If it has been 12 times at 3 different dealerships for the same problem, then you should have documentation of what symptoms you experienced along with their findings. that might give you some recourse, especially if it broke after repeatedly being told no problem found. Perhaps something else in the vehicle history?
