I bought this last year; the interior was in great condition as well as the body. The dealer had done $3300 worth of work on it after it was traded. Brakes and rotors all the way around, and replaced right side exhaust manifold bolts. I am a bit disappointed in the gas mileage of 12 mpg for a 2wd is less than I expected. Still getting use to the 8-speed tranny, certainly not the old torqflite of the past. Any recommendations on improving the gas mileage? Tuners, headers or just live with it?

Sadly there is no magical wand to improve mpg at any significant rate. Disconnect battery for a short term and then let system re-set and learn your driving habits. Crew cab is a bigger vehicle, ease up on your throttle foot, maintain tire pressures with a good rolling resistance tire. Other than that, you may have to live with it. The cost of investing in items that say they improve fuel mileage, that money could buy lots of fuel instead.

Yeah, nothing you really can do will pay for itself in any reasonable amount of time. Manufacturers didn't use to really care about MPGs but are now heavily scrutinized/motivated and have some really smart people working on it. Like 06 Dodge says, best method is your right foot. With my truck I've found stop/go city driving and winter-blend fuel really suck the MPGs down. Out on the highway and not speeding I can get 20.

You could check and make sure your calipers aren’t causing any dram on the wheels. Running aggressive tires ?

12 mpg seems a bit low to me. My '15 QC 2wd with the hemi runs at 18-19 on the evic if I am a little hard on the skinny pedal, but I can also get around 21 mpg hand calculated on trips on the interstate as well, and that's with 156k miles on her.

Stop and go driving drags it down, as well as idling alot.

Maybe there is a faulty sensor somewhere. For instance, years ago I had a Saturn that started getting horrible mileage. Turned out that the coolant temp sensor was shot and reading low. It caused the computer to think it was very cold so it dumped excess gas into the engine.

I wish I could be more help, but there are many here with lots more knowlege on these Rams. I wish you the best on getting it sorted out

Good ideas above about fuel mileage. Also, excessive toe in or toe out can decrease mileage, but not as much as has been mentioned above.

Every little bit helps though.

If your 12 mpg is stop and go in town I’d say that’s the lower end of normal. On a highway you should get much better. The ‘19 1500 I had could get over 20 on CC at 65-70 mph on flat roads, and that was 3.92 gears. Mixed driving was about 15 mpg.

I typically get 12-14 around town, better on freeways obviously, and that’s with a 7” lift and 35” tires.

If I get on the pedal a lot, the gas gauge is directly connected to the pedal, then the gas will get sucked up faster than a fat kid can eat a dozen donuts.

I average 13mpg. Jumps up to 17mpg if I drive under 75, hovers around 18 if I do speed limit. Not a whole lot you can do to save the gas, but if you were that concerned you wouldnt be driving a truck. I average 25mpg in my beater '07 300...Id rather drive that than put miles on the truck anyways, maybe you can buy an alternative just to alleviate? Best 2000 bucks you can spend is on a craigslist car that you can drive until the wheels fall off.

I didn't read anything about your tk's rear diff ratio? Have you checked to see what it was supposed to be from the factory? It's possible it was changed, to a different ratio...for towing, say, a travel trailer. You could put the rear up on jackstands and check it out. There are videos on youtube which show how to calculate by rotating the wheel/pinion. If it is a high ratio that would explain a lot.

If you have a buddy who has a decent OBD scanner, have him do a scan in the Am, before starting the truck, and compare the truck's temperature sensor/s (the one the computer reads) to ambient temps. And when it's warm, check coolant at the upper radiator hose neck (at the engine) with an IR temp gun. Compare that it matches (close ..it won't be perfect) to what the computer temp is reading. You can get a free scan at a part's store, but hard to get a 'cold' reading unless you park your tk there a long time.
