Ok, so I have seen a wide range of different oil viscosity rating choices by the many members here who are doing their best to avoid any cam/lifter future failures on the 5.7L.

From what I have seen it appears that most of us (to include myself) uses 5W-30 when using Redline oil. Now, I would like to know who is using 5W-40 or even 0W-30 or 0W-40. For 0W-40, is the flow going to be good enough at normal op temp? I personally feel 0W-30 would seem to be the best choice however I want to know why some use 0W-40 and if there is proof its really effective in the 5.7L. Why is 5W-30 the better choice over 0W-30?

For Idaho it is best to change oil right when winter turns cold maybe a week or two after and 0w30 redline has been the best, there is to be a new formulation and we don't know if it will be as good as the old version 0w30 redline. No way 0w40 is the move, it is way thicker then 5w30 redline even at start up in the cold and it is the poorest performer in the redline lineup when comparing it to other brands, the shear is ridiculous and it is very thick, neither is desirable for the 5.7. You can try 5w30, if your truck doesnt end up with cold piston slap that is pure hemi honey, but in cold places ram members have better luck with 0w30. The only time I'd consider 5w40 is if I had hemi tick and 5w30 only made is somewhat better, otherwise I'd leave that alone, especially in winter. The bottom line is sometimes we have to react if a situation comes up. Best way to avoid tossing out good oil, go right to 0w30 first.

Sadly, I didn't see this response come through and ironically found it today looking at possibly switching over to 0w-30. I did start with 5w-30. I don't know that I ever heard any piston slap or anything out of the ordinary in some really cold temps. I live in Boise and we don't deal with any temps below 20 degrees even, all too often. We definitely don't see temps below 0 unless its a freak winter. hmm I guess I will stick with 5w30.

Love Redline. None will prevent the CLF. Mechanics matters.

Fully prevent it? no, you're right but the additives in Redline has shown through plenty of proof that it does the best job at helping prevent it or at least prolonging it.

Op, I'm in Montana and routinely see below zero temperatures for about 3 months of the year. Truck is 2016 Laramie Sport 4x4 with 5.7.

Alot depends on whether you park inside or out, whether you plug in or not

I'm always parked inside a heated garage which is kept at 45 degrees during winter.

If the truck is outside for any reason it's plugged in unless I'm out where no plug exists which is rare.

I run redline 5w30 year round and have had no issues in 68k of ownership.

I would switch to 0w30 if I heard any startup noise but I have not.

If you are parked outside in below zero temperatures 0w30 is the way to go, if you're parked inside it might be a toss up.

My opinion

That's all I need to hear :). I think it is best to stick to 5w30 because it does work.

Where is the proof? Before you point out anecdotal evidence, or an internet forum poll, consider what proof means. You're welcome.

Doing the oil change soon 30K 4th one..doing Redline or if not available Penzoil Platinum Ultra with Wix filter..might get that addative Lube Guard Bio Tech in a month when in USA...and add a little.

I run 5w30 year around here in GA....no issues, but it doesn't get really cold here.

Do we know what was changed in their formula yet?

@Burla had a response from Red Line about change to 0W-30 going to API SP and some ISLAC specs. I don't remember the details, maybe he'll weigh in, but the 100C vis was slightly lower, not a big deal. I think the moly was still up there, and maybe the detergent split went toward Mg more than Ca to suppress LSPI events in small motors. Not sure why anyone with a w h i z motor would use Red Line? Maybe part of the street racing scene?

Not sure anyone has pulled a VOA form the new formula either. All my inventory is original 0W-30 formula, otherwise I'd sure send a sample in.
