Hi all and Happy Christmas!

Any recommendations for good winter/all-terrain tires? I recently moved to a rural area (hence the pickup purchase!) where the county doesn't service the roads much (no snow plowing, salt, etc). Since I will be driving on a lot on untreated, gravel, and forest service roads, I want to swap my 175/55R20 BSW all-season tires for winter/all-terrain tires. How big can I go on the stock 20x9 inch rims? Truck is a '21 RAM 1500 with Hemi engine and 11,000 miles.

Thanks!

In your profile your in Nova or at least the DMV area right? Just get a good AT tire. I’d recommend Falken WildPeak AT3W. Mine have served me well 90mi south of you. Just drive smart. We get a lot of ice and unless you want to stud your tires (which would be a waste in VA/MD) driving on ice in anything is treacherous.

I am a strong believer in dedicated snow tires.
I am also old school in that I do not like the wide tires on todays pickups.
It was hard to beat a good 235/85-16 (7.50-16) studded traction tread tire.
On my "19" I'm running LT 265/75r18's instead of the stock width LT 275/65R18's.
They are just a bit narrower and a bit taller, I wish they were even narrower and the same height.
Your stock 275/55R20 is within two tenths of the height of my 275/65R18's and shorter then my 265/75R18's.
My snows have been Hakkapelliita studded snows for the last 10 years, prior to that I ran Cooper Winter Masters
always with studds.

Agree that theres nothing better than a dedicated set, but in this area of the country the OP resides, maybe +/- 12” cumulative snowfall annually. He may get more if he is further NorthWest than indicated in his profile. A true rated AT may serve him better.

Quite a few good AT/winter tires out there. I'll recommend three that I have experience with. If you were in the West I'd recommend Les Schwab Open Range AT tires. B F Goodrich KO2's work just as well, but don't have the same tread wear guarantee. Falken Wildpeak AT3 is another great tire in this class.

I would go with BFG ko2s or Toyo at3s or falken. They all preform good enough but like stated about if you want superior traction go with a dedicated winter tire with studs.

As someone who actually off-roads in the winter when its below -20 .My 37" Falken Wildpeak A/T3W are great.
The Guy I off-road with Runs KO2s on his Tacoma. When we full send we both get stuck... lol... That also goes when we hit the Mudhole.

In my 43 years of Canadian winter driving , This is the first time in my life I have 3 peak symbol on my tires. Thats because my insurance requires it now FFS.. lol... Last year I had 4 bald 37s... Still didnt get stuck and pulled out guys with my winch that had studs.... hahahahhaahha

Tires dont do **** in -40, its the driver.

I just got Toyo Open Country AT's earlier this week. So far I have no complaints but haven't driven them in snow yet but have heard good things. Mine are 285/60 20 load range E. $360 each

Ran Bfg KO2s and they work great in snow and we’ll work great in everything but sticky mud.
I hear good stuff about General Grabber AT3s as well and they are what I am putting on our Jeep GC .

I’ve never had luck with ko2s in snow. The wet snow would just pack into the tires creating slicks. Wildpeaks, however, were great. Goodyear Duratracs were also good.

I run Falkens here in TX. We do not get a lot of snow, minus 2021 freak weather, but we get a lot of wet roads and muddy roads, and other, so peaks work for me. BTW, they did pretty well in 8" of snow and ice. But moral of story is, weather that bad, do not go out unless U gotta, LOL.

Bridgestone Blazzak LT winter tire not sure if they have them in your size, another snow tire I have used was Cooper SST, I had the center of the tire sipped or the Copper S/T Maxx again not sure if they have them in your size...

I sold tires for years in the snowy part of Idaho. Blizzak are probably the best on ice, other good ones I have run that are dedicated snow tires are Michelin, General and Goodyear. On icy roads a true snow tire works much better than any all terrain or mud tire but usually are not as good in very deep snow because they do not have open enough tread pattern. FOr most people a 3 peak rated tire will do a good enough job in the winter. Goodyear Duratrac or Kevlar wrangler doa great job for all around use.

i have never run a winter tire in my life i jus make sure i have good all around tires never left me stranded. As you can see by the picture at the top studs are worthless after the first month or 2 if you have had to drive on pavement. It wears the points off on the studs and rounds them off, how do you get grip on rounded off metal.

I had a pretty good experience with the Nitto Ridge Grappler in the snow, but to be fair, that was only perhaps for a week or two at a time. Then the snow melted. If you have more snow it might be better to get a dedicated wheel set. People have criticized my opinion and/or the tires, because the Ridge Grappler don't have this snowflake symbol on them but I know what I know.
