Amsoil is like Amazon; go online, order, bam…on my doorstep two days later with filters and o-rings.
AMSOIL is good oil. If you're already using it, stick to it.

But by golly there's less sulfur coming out of the tailpipe by a microscopic amount!
To me that looks like a plugged EGR cooler that no longer did its job.

Are Diesel emission systems stupid? Of course they are. Do you like to breathe (kinda) clean air? Yeah, they're a compromise at the owner's expense.

Don't get me started on sulfur removal. To strip sulfur, you also lose some heavy hydrocarbons so energy density is lowwr.

Think about it - you pay more for a fuel with higher consumption and higher engine wear.

Great deal, eh?

From Dave @ HPL -

Below is a summary of the different offerings in the passenger car category:
PCMO Premium - same as above but with a star polymer instead of OCP - very good in cold climates
PCMO Premium Plus - same as the premium but made with a group IV PAO - extremely good in cold climates
SuperCar - These are euro specification multi-synthetic oils made with Group IV PAOs, esters, and AN. We originally made this to sell to a niche market of supercar owners - targeting the 0W-40 viscosity. Same as the EURO oil above, each viscosity meets/exceeds the performance specifications of a different set of specs

SuperCar adds the esters Red Line has, PLUS AN's which are a superior ester (newer molecule). Also per Travis it goes back to non API SP formula with high Calcium moderate Magnesium.

There are substantial viscosity and HTHS differences between Premium Plus & Super Car 0W-30 due to this

Super Car Vis @ 100C 12.2 cSt
Premium Plus Vis @ 100C 10.0 cSt

Super Car HTHS vis @ 150C 3.5 cP
Premium Plus HTHS vis @ 150C 3.0 cP

Based on these typical properties, I'd expect Super Car to have significantly lower NOACK evaporation also.

Cold temperature wise, they have near identical Pour Point Temperatures, however -
Super Car has higher Cold Cranking Simulator vis than Premium Plus - but - but - but - it is identical to Red Line 0W-30!

Conclusion = HPL replicated Red Line 0W-30 with improved ester.
You can't see all this stuff unless you lay it out on a spreadsheet and study it, like I did above.
Thanks for doing the footwork bro!

Changed oil today in my 6.4 120k went with pup 0w40 and lubegard like I have been since I got it. Went with a fram xg2 this time. It fits but there's only about half inch of clearance between the filter and radiator hose. I'm going to keep an eye on it but it should be fine since I've ran the rp 20-820 without issues.

I keep going back and forth about trying a different oil (redline, amsoil, and now hpl) but the pup seems to be working and I still have 2 extra quarts of it. I stocked up when napa had it on sale awhile ago. Now I just buy a 6 pack and use an extra one at each change so at 5k oci if I keep doing what I am then I'm good til I hit 135k.

Mariner of the Sea, and it only takes 104 gallons of gas per mile, now that is some bad mpg's. 12 feet per gallon the Oasis of the sea gets., lol.

The average American will use 30-40k gallons of gas in their lifetime, a cruise on that ship will use 120k gallons in a week, lol. Can you imagine how bad it would be if their engine was out of tune? Wouldn't happen though, they have great gauges that tells the captain and the crew everything going on with the engine.

I can't seam to find how much oil is in their sump tank. You think they use synthetic or not? I would bet they do.

This is fairly new ship, lots of smoke, do they burn oil for lubrication? The new ships hold 7k people, I don't think they have enough life rafts, lol.

And yet the EPA focuses on us. Makes sense.

Check this out, you can buy a suite on old cruise ships with ocean view for like 35k, permantly docked due to covid. Man, this would be an easy way to live in a city, probably fun for a certain type of person. Fees are similar to condo. I need a bigger tv though.

Come to find out actually they use the worst fuel you could possibly use, dirt cheap heavy oil, a step above crude. I guess you can get away with it when the parts are that large. I doubt the have tight tolerances in those engines like us. About 1/2 the cost of refined fuels we use.

Yep - it's called Bunker C Residual. They actually have to heat it just to be able to pump it to the injectors. As you'd expect, it's full of crude contaminants like sulfur, and minerals. Mobil has an entire division dedicated to marine engines. The engine oils used have a starting TBN of 70 because of the high sulfur in the fuel.

Interestingly, these crosshead engines are 2 stroke diesels, they do not change engine oil - they burn it! You can see and smell the exhaust (I've been on one cruise in my life - also my last). EPA can't get it's mitts on these ships they aren't U.S. flagged.

Engines go north of 100,000 shp.

Yup, offshore operation including full on trash/oil slick dumps at sea, registered out of one of the island nations in the Caribbean, still get massive bail outs from the US though.

Well I can't imagine being on the deck of the titanic for a different reason, I bet those folks sucked their fair share of smoke. They sure have improved on this design, put the stacks on the way back position.

Of course it moves 4000-5000 people, not 4 or 5 people...

I've seen this kind of **** at work when big corporations buy up smaller ones and bleed them of profit. The executives push engineers to throw products out the door long before they're ready. I lived that dream the last 10 years of career, and Chrysler's been a play thing for bigger automakers for at least 20+ years.
So the bean counters override the engineering department?
