Sorry if it's been mentioned, but have you looked under the hood of a new Silverado with the turbo 2.7L 4cyl? It doesn't appear to have any more open space in the engine bay than a V8. There's so much crap in the way because of the turbo, you can't get at anything easily.

This inline 6 won't be any better.

It's a lot of conjecture this point as to whether gas (maybe hydrogen?) engines can be designed to produce and sustain torque and horsepower as we expect and want.

Maybe something in the vein of the new Cummins multi-fuel engine could be in the cards. In any case, it will be years before the V8 dies, and hopefully any transition will allow enough time for comparison and reliability traits to be established.

But in terms of space, I am not saying is going to be like the old days where you could climb in the engine compartment with a lunch and make a day of it. I agree. All of the new gadgets will fill it up pretty quickly.

the inline 6 is supposed to be twin turbo? One on each side, each feeding 3 jugs. Basically another science fair to try to make up for lack of displacement. Buh-bye durability!

Those might as well be utters being feed by allot of hot air!!!
I owned a ferd 2.7 twin turbo filled up the engine bay and luck if you got 50,000 without failures, the dealer hated to work on them they would rather work on the 5.0 NA oil burner!!!

yepper - the boards I'd read said 50,000 to 70,000 miles out of an ecoboost if you used your truck like a truck and towed.

worse yet, they got worse mileage towing than a naturally-aspirated larger displacement engine. So the real advantage to a small displacement w*h*i*z motor is...........(wait for it) dead heading grocery-getter.

Not only with trucks but any of the duty Interceptors don't last long nor do any civilian 3.5TT's when driven hard like 90% of the people do. It's one of the main reasons I did not buy a Taurus SHO a few years ago.

They were talking a few years ago that vehicle might go 24 volt as the weight savings in a vehicle (wiring, switches, etc) could be as much as a 100 plus pounds per car, do to being able to use smaller guage wire, and hardware. Progress isn't it great!!!!
Makes perfect sense to me. "We" went from 6v to 12v more than half a century ago. Why not take it a step further?

Likewise, I don't know why we're at 115v in the US when most of the world is a at 230v. Imagine how many tons of copper could be saved and millions of dollars if the USA went to 230v!.

When I was young you'd go to Wal-mart and see signs that said something like "this toaster oven created 17 jobs in Bumbleton, AR" or some such.
When I was young there was no such thing as Wal-Mart.

But I get your point...

Auto Industry was talkin 42V systems in all vehicles 25 years ago. I remember reading about it in industry trade rags.

It hasn't happened. Somebody pushed back somewhere.

I used to think this for every vehicle made, especially trucks. I was in my early 20's when my Dad picked up a 83 CJ8 with a 4.2 I6, and I badgered him to let me put a V8 in it. I was in my early 40's when I inherited it, and my mindset was, maybe I'll put a small block in when this I6 craps out . I'm in my mid 50's and its still running great, largely due to a 4.0 head and injection, but I digress. I'm currently negotiating with a guy for a 68 W200 crew cab power wagon with a slant 6, and if I get it I intend to leave it in there. All that said, I still want a V8 in my 9000+ lb work truck ;)

CJ8's don't tow travel trailers or contractor trailers like I do.
