Dave @ HPL helped us think of it this way - they targeted Premium Plus engine oil for API SP engines. Recall SP was targeted to engines susceptable to LSPI and higher power densities (better gas mileage). That means the little turbo motors with GDI.

They targeted Super car for API SN engines, just like Red Line oil - lots and lots of additives, even though Premium Plus still has enough moly for Hemis.

They also made Super Car stiffer = higher viscosity within the SAE grades for better load carrying / towing. Super car also has 17% higher HTHS viscosity. Clearly, Super Car is for trucks, Premium Plus is for go carts.

Hope this helps.
So Super Car 5-30 for an all year oil in partial year freezing climates?

I still like the premium plus series i dont think theres anything wrong with it. Its still full of additives just with lower zddp and lower HTHS. IMO premium plus 5w30 and supercar 0w30 both look like ideal year round oils. What drew me to the supercar 0w30 is its closer to FS 0w40. Both are PAO/ester base oils. Im not sure if both contain ANs but the supercar does. As far as cold flow for HPL I would look at their ccs and mrv specs as HPL publishes every spec except for noack. Premium plus 0w30 has better ccs and mrv than supercar 0w30 which is not suprising as it is lower viscosity but depending on your yearly milage premium plus 5w30 might be an ideal year round oil as well. Still has terrific cold flow.

So Premium Plus 5-30 vs Supercar 0-30 then?
That would be a great choice year round IMO. Great long drain detergent package and loads of moly to go with it. Pours at -58/-72 and has a great mrv@-35 of under 14,000. No worry in using this oil in cold environments thats for sure

Redline smells like brandy, likely from the reaction it takes to make ester (alcohol and acid), but the exact reason i do not know. Could even be additive related. But it is a nice story, we need some guys with hemi tick to dance with this stuff before we know for sure if it is a redline replacement. It certainly has my blessing and belief it is in theory every bit as good as redline and perhaps even better at killing tick. I hope some guys embrace this option. Redline also has a little red tint to it, just a hair.

What oil are you using ? How do you like the 6.2 engine ?
just dump Castrol EDGE , and change it to valvoline ep, I do like the valvoline better, I got amsoil signature to go in next, I do like the 6.2 have power everywhere in the power band, seem little stronger than the hemi, down side burn more gas and premium only . the ram is nicer over all truck , better build quality on interior and drive nicer, the GM is ...... a truck.

I would use Super Car 0W-30 year round, unless I towed trailers above 10,000 lbs more than half dozen times a year.

HPL uses shear resistant VII additive. Not worried about shear down as in other 0W's.

Again, Premium Plus is targeted toward lighter duty and cars because of the API SP rating. I recommend the higher viscosity and HTHS of Super Car.

We have similar climate so I appreciate the insight. I just changed and have a 5qt 5-30 PUP and 3qt 0-30 Redline mix going this interval and the next one. I'll likely switch to HPL after that.

It sounds like you have a good understanding of the differences between different types of motor oils and their suitability for different applications. It is important to choose the right motor oil for your vehicle to ensure that it is well-lubricated and protected against wear and tear.

I see. It is possible that the smell of brandy in Red Line Oil is due to the reaction that is used to make the esters in the oil. Esterification is a chemical reaction in which an ester is formed by the condensation of an alcohol with a carboxylic acid. The resulting product, an ester, typically has a fruity or floral smell. It is also possible that the smell could be due to the addition of certain aromatic compounds to the oil as additives. These compounds can have a wide range of smells, including fruity, floral, or even brandy-like. As for the red tint of the oil, this could be due to the presence of certain pigments or dyes in the oil that give it a reddish color. I hope this information helps.

$11.68 per quart in gallons?! wtf? Did people stop buying inflated Red Line pricing in revolt?

Maybe the supply shortage is over.

That thing was a coal burner. Basically not much different than Bunker-C Residual fuel. Both are fossil slop.

We have a Great Lakes Ferry that crosses Lake Michigan that was still burning coal up to a few years ago. That thing smoked and stunk, too. I've watched it from port while salmon fishing.

Funny enough that ship is actually using lubricants custom blended by High Performance Lubricants!
