How to Diagnose Axle & Differential Noise

Warm the axle and differential components and fluid by driving the vehicle at least ten miles.

Growling or whine noise that occurs only at a specific speed range (straight-ahead driving)

On a straight, smooth and level road, bring the vehicle past the speed that produces the noise. Shift the vehicle out of gear and coast down through the speed range where the noise is usually heard. If the noise stops or changes significantly:

Low or insufficient differential lubricant

Expired or contaminated differential lubricant; incorrect viscosity or lubricant

Incorrect ring gear backlash

Incorrect pinion depth

Incorrect pinion-to-ring gear tooth contact

Worn or damaged front pinion bearing

Damaged ring or pinion gear teeth

Incorrect carrier housing offset or squareness

NOTE: Noise in a specific speed range can also be initiated during acceleration or light load constant speed.

On a straight, smooth and level road, load the differential by accelerating the vehicle:

If noise occurs, the rear pinion bearing is defective

On a straight, smooth and level road, unload the differential by coasting the vehicle:

If noise occurs, the front pinion bearing is defective

Constant Noise (any speed)

Worn, scalloped, or defective tires

Worn or damage pinion bearings

Worn or damaged differential bearings

Worn or damaged axle bearings

Noise occurs on turns only

Worn or damaged differential side gears or thrust washers

Worn differential bearings or thrust washers

Worn axle bearings

Vibration

Defective or out-of-balance tire(s)

Damaged, bent or out-of-balanced wheels

Damaged or bent drive shaft

Out-of-balance driveshaft (missing weights)

Loose or unevenly torqued wheel lug nuts

Worn U-joints

Weak coils or loose or broken rear spring leaves

Damaged axle shaft bearings

Loose pinion gear retaining nut

Excessive pinion yoke run-out

Bent axle shaft(s)

Low Speed Knock

Worn U-joint

Worn side gears or side gear thrust washers

Worn pinion shaft bore in the carrier housing

Driveline Snap -Clunk or Snap sound when vehicle placed into Gear,

Clunk or snap when changing gears

High engine idle speed

Transmission shift operation (automatic)

Transmission shift operation (manual – operator)

Loose engine, transmission, or transfer case mounts

Worn U-joints

Loose spring mounts

Loose pinion gear nut and yoke

Excessive ring gear backlash

Excessive side gear backlash

How would you check backlash?

My apologies. The diagnostic procedure I included was intended for automotive technicians which implies an actual dial indicator reading, if required.

However, you can get can some idea of pinion to ring gear backlash by rotating the driveshaft and observing the amount of free rotation as the pinion gear engages the ring gear teeth. Since the backlash on most differentials is in the +/- .015 inch range, you should not observe much free movement.

I never got to work on a diff that was that clean, much less even see one! Looks brand new.

I pulled it out the truck and cleaned it when I did my 4.56 gear swap. Much easier to work on and dial in .

That’s crazy, i’ve never had that happen on my truck luckily, very sorry that happened to you but atleast it didn’t happen in a situation where it could’ve put your life on the line.

Originally, there was a leak at the pinion seal that let all the gear oil out and i kept on forgetting to top it off. Learned that lesson the hard way. Took the drain plug out a while after the differential was screaming and it was more metal than it was gear oil.

I’m going to check the fluid and see if it’s metallic this time, if it is it’s going right back to the dealership and they better explain to me why they screwed up so bad and that it better get fixed ASAP.

My rear diff blew on my 2019 ram 1500 warlock at 46,000 km. The km dial felt like it was resisting acceleration slightly and had a vibration in my truck. Immediately thought it was a seized brake caliper. Checked all hub caps for heat and looked under my vehicle and saw nothing concerning. 10 minutes later i heard a grinding. I was driving in a snow storm in the mountains so waited until the first safe pullout i could find. In my mirror i could see steam comming off my rear end. Looked like snow evqporsting off something hot. Immediately looked up a mechanic and drove there since it was 2 minutes away as i was just about to enter a small town.

The mechanic under permission of dodge (i told him to call dodge b4 doing anything as it was under warranty) Was told by the dealership to take the cover off and look for damage and refill with oil and send me on my way but book an appointment at my dealership where i was heading. No metal bits or damage but there was burned oil inside. Mechanic test drove it and no issues. I checked the diff 4 or 5 times on my 800 km trip. No grinding or leaks. I crawled under my vehicle every time i filled gas or bought food. Then 8 hrs later i hear a loud whirring noise as i am in a remote mountain area in the snow again. I decide to pull into the nearest gas station. The diff blew out hot oil and failed completely as i pulled into the gas ststion. Had it towed and dealership said they would void my warranty because a cap was missing from my diff (apparently). They said i owed $4,500 for repairs or would have to sue the mechanic. When i told them the other dealership ok'd the inspection with the mschanic earlier they said that dealership had no recollection of that call... i then proceeded to find the work order where i had the mechanic write in pen that he had contacted the dodge dealership regarding the repairs and got the ok. They approved the repairs under warranty the next day. 2 months later its fixed and i have it towed to where i moved. 3 days into driving it and i hear grinding again. Dont drive it for a week as i wait a service apppintment with dodge. They said they didn't see anything wrong so i had to go test drive it with their mechanic after work. Immediately it was grinding. They say they agree. Next day i get a call saying my rear diff failed again (other dealership installed incorrectly) and parts are on backorder. How does a new diff fail in under a week? I saw there are recalls for ram 1500s in the US for not fully filled rear differentials from factory. Could this be an issue in canada too? I am going to guess the cap wiggled its way out or was somehow damaged or ejected when the rewr diff failed. Now i feel like i will be out a truck 4 + months and i am worried the new bewring kit will also fail when it gets replaced. If you are hearing a whirring sound from your rear diff thst is not normal and you could easily be in my situation very soon.

IMO those who found low gear oil on a new truck several months after buying it had a selling dealer who failed to do a proper PDI inspection, if the dealer workers had inspected it like they should every new vehicle that arrives they would have found the gear oil was low and topped it off just like they do when you have the oil changed an they check all of your fluids...

PDI'ing a new vehicle seems to be a lost art these days. The cars also have a bit of a rep of being shipped low on diff fluid to. I knew the later 2018+cars had that rep,so the first thing i checked on the wifes 2019 Challenger when she drove it home was the diff fluid, and sure enough it took about a 1/2 litre of fluid before i could touch it with a pinky finger

When I bought my 11 Ram back in 11, it was about 6 months when a FCA issued a recall saying to bring it in as the rear diff was produced without a fill hole in the diff cover. I took mine in with a little over 20k miles. And they completely rebuilt the rear diff, with new bearings. And ring and pinion gear. I had zero noise before or after the rebuild but after the rebuild I got a new diff cover with a fill hole and rubber plug.

Ran that truck over 150k miles and new had an issue.

Never knew anything other than it was a recall but they were anxious to get it in and replaced.

If you experience rear-end noise check the oil level and check the ring and pinion, they are probably not set up correctly. You can also check the spider gears and the bearings. If you continue to drive your truck while the gears are not set up properly, you'll ruin the ring and pinion gears.
