Mine just started the tick as well. The video posted yesterday shows me all I need to know and it makes 100% sense. The marks on the lifters explain exactly what is going. No matter what oil you guys use, it is a massive design fail and the shortage of lucubration will cause premature failure.

I won't be playing around with 15 different oils, being send back home by arrogant dealers and risking a 5k repair right after warranty runs out. Will be selling my truck.

I think you need to do what is comfortable for you. For me, I plan to drive this truck till it dies. I have a 2014 5.7 and works hard towing. Only job is to tow for me. I'm at 73k and drives like a champ. My oil temp ranges and hit as high as 276 when I'm towing. I don't baby my Hemi either - synthetic 5w-20 but will be switching to 5w-30. I"m hoping to squeeze another 75k miles out of the truck. So far I really enjoy this truck. Design flaw but some folks are getting 200k, 300k out of them with no tick. Ford, Chevy, GMC all have some flaws as well. Do you research and you will see. But again, do what is comfortable for you and of course your own peace of mind.

I am hoping to be one of these folks, as I have 155K on my truck now, and the engine runs quiet and strong. Should I ever have cam/lifters issues, I will throw in a new engine...love this truck!

Right! I got a Hemi because prior, I always hear how reliable and hard working these engines are. And I just love ram trucks. Personally they just look mean. The ford and Chevy looks like my grandparents truck. Ram just looks badass to me. Again just my personal opinion. I haven’t had any major issues with it and my 5.7 just tow tow tow.

Could towing and not babying these engines keeps the cam lub? Who knows. But they seem to run forever for guys that run the crap out of them.

So, I know this is an old post but here is my Hemi Tick story (which is ongoing). I ordered my 2012 Express in 2011 and had it built exactly how I wanted. It has been the very best vehicle I have ever owned and on-par with my mighty 90's 5.0L Mustangs for longevity. Every single oil change (every 5000 miles) has been done at the dealership until the last one at 150,000 which I did myself with 7 Quarts Penzoil High Mileage 5W-20 and my engine is ticking loudly. It is not the exhaust bolts (had them replaced recently under Chrysler Lifetime Maxicare Warranty). So, this week, I am going to have the dealership do an oil change and report back in a couple weeks.

What a great thread, just read through it all for the first time. But all the links in the posts to videos for sound comparisons are completely gone. I'm sure the videos are still on YT, the forum just doesn't contain the links to them anymore. I wonder what happened there?

Mine is a 2007 so not sure if i have the latest Gen Hemi or not. Thinking i dont. But ive never had a tick. Its actually pretty quiet. No rumble exhaust like they have now so especially in early AM and night when its last i can hear every noise. Years ago i had to replace my belt tensioner as it started to make a faint noise and i could hear it.

It has 121K miles on it and runs like a champ but i do not tow anything with it. I use convensional oil in it that i change every 3500 to 4000 miles. I dont have MDS either.

The hemi changed in 2009. Your generation's "flaw" is dropping valve seats when you overheat them, our generation is the tick.

And here's the final result after 2100 miles on RL5w30 after it was ticking so bad on the older SN 5w30 SS.

When you compare this video to the first one I posted there's no comparison.

So, the oil change did appear to quiet it down, but it is still present. It is loudest at first startup of the day after sitting all night (so, I would assume an exhaust manifold bolt has cracked again but I have been under there a couple times and the heat shields are very tight and firm). It mostly goes away within a mile of driving and feels very smooth throughout RPM band. I have a 1000-mile trip coming up so, if there is anything serious, it will show up then.

Those symptoms do sound like the manifolds, maybe a crack in the manifold instead of a broken bolt would do what you're describing, tough to say without pulling the shields though.

If it got better and quieted it down quite a bit with the oil change, then it probably isnt bolts, because redline doesn't quiet down exhaust at all. The science of moly, it takes time to plate.

Ok, so I am back after a few months (153,500 miles). I thought the oil change helped but I now have ticking and the occasional chirp from inside the engine. tick tick tick chirp tick tick tick tick chirp (I thought a bird was trapped under the engine cover). It made loud ticking last night (almost knocking) and well after warmed up. I don't want to assume lifer/cam yet but signs are leaning that way. About time to take it to Dodge.
