Is the tranny warm or cold, which ever way it is,try it the opposite way,if it's cold take it for a drive and get it warmed up,if it's hot,let it cool down for an hour or 2. It might help to take a sharp pick and run it around the edge of the cap to help knock any crud off that might have built up.Mine gave me a bit of a struggle, but with a good sharp pair of side cutters and after running a pick around the outside edge of the cap i was able to carefully grab onto the tit enough to work the cap out.

Yeah, it was cold. Sat overnight.

You put the side cutters on the tit and pulled out?

I'll try again next weekend.
You wouldn't happen to know the part number to that cap in case I really mess this one up?

Thanks

The key word being carefully, but yes, lol. I've never seen a part number for the end cap,if you do find a number for it ,please pass it on,as i might buy an extra just to have on hand. You could try spraying it down with a decent penetrating fluid and seeing it that might help loosen it up.

Might help to spray it off with some brake clean, then a little shot of WD40. All I grabbed mine with was a regular pair of slip joint pliers and wiggled a bit.

Same here, wiggle back and forth with some pliers and it should come out. I did mine after getting the trans up to full temp. The plug is only held in with an o-ring so it shouldn't be impossible to get out.

Thanks guys.

I thought about using brake cleaning but I know sometimes that stuff likes to eat plastic.

I will give it another shot this weekend.

In the mean time. Put in the 180 thermo and removed the slats in the shutters.
Noticeable improvement in coolant and engine temps as I expected.

I swear to god, these trucks are not the same I thought between my 09 and this 18.
Like having the extra hose coming coming off the main hose to the thermostat and then another tiny hose that runs off the block down below the thermostat.
Just more hoses to replace when they go bad. lol

Wanted to post this just for info for anyone who is on the fence of changing their transmission fluid. I am just over 30k miles and decided to do my first transmission fluid change. For reference I did the transfer case and diffs at 10k so this is just standard practice for me. I also installed the Revmax bypass kit at the same time and it made a dramatic difference in transmission temps. I am a bit thrifty, so I bought a $35 ebay pan and a couple gallons of Redline D6. I also used one of the $10 home depot sprayer pumps to pump fluid. I would 1000% recommend this and not the crappy transfer pumps we have all used. A couple pics attached. The pan was almost identical down to the magnets. It came with all new bolts but one of the torx heads wasnt cut well so I reused an old bolt and trashed it. You can also see the fluid had already gotten fairly grey for only 30k miles on a lifetime fluid. The transmission shifts much smoother with the new fluid and the 2-1 shift coming to a stop is a lot smoother as well. I need to order some more fluid but plan do drain the pan again and refill in the next month or so.

Edit: Forgot to mention I took 5 quarts out of the transmission. Im guessing close to a quart was for the lines to the Revmax kit. It took right at 5 quarts to fill also.

Old thread I know, but I'm very close to changing my fluid. Not sure about the filter. I'm at 60,000 miles. 1500 Ram 2WD, 2017. You didn't go with the ZF compatible fluid. Doesn't your truck require it? (The green tinted fluid).

Avoid Redlines D6 fluid as it has a rep of not being a great fluid for the 8 speed, but lots of guys are using Valvolene's Maxlife in the 8 speed with no issues. If you still have warrenty or extended warrenty, then you'll want to stick with the gold plated OEM fluid

People that take care of their vehicles tend to get lucky with their performance.
After high school I worked on a road construction crew as a mechanic's helper. The foreman had me grease his Ford pickup every Friday.

I should probably update that post, but as Wild One said the D6 is a little too slippery. I ended up changing it out for Valvoline MaxLife. I'm at almost 50k now with no issues. I towed quite a bit last summer as well.
