I think we're losing sight here.
On the one hand if you were not happy with the truck then yes this would be as good a time, as any, to trade it.
That said keep in mind that this IS a machine that had a part that went bad.
As long as the engine that is replaced, be it a short block or long block, is brand new then no harm no foul!
Yes even a short block COULD fix it. That is on the tech's in the shop.
As for diminished value - nill!!!!
You sound like the type of buyer that stays up on the maintenance of his vehicles.
I would keep all the receipts and, yes, be able to communicate the reason the engine was changed.
Diesels are usually pretty resiliant to what you throw at it. That's why they're such good work horses!

I hada 2020 Camaro SS. The LT1 motor blew. With the car sitting on the lot waiting for a new engine, I asked if they would buy it. They said yes. SOLD.

No way in hell am i taking an engine swap from the dealer home. They do not specialize in that at all.

They could not even change your oil correctly.

Like any auto shop they have techs of different skill sets. You have master technicians with 20+ years of a experience and you have guys that have a 2 year ASE certification. Guess which one is changing your oil?

I get the hierarchy, and to your point, how many engines has this master technician replaced in said 20 years? **** that, not even remotely worth the hassle.

I see your point, but unfortunately engine replacement is far more frequent at a dealership. My son worked for a KIA dealer. KIA/Hyundai had a bad run of vehicles with timing chain issues. It was at least once a month they were putting in a new engine. Many were done though factory warranty, but not all. He said vehicles were towed in with shredded motors all the time.

There is that… I would take some comfort in the fact that they likely assign any teenager first day on the job to oil changes and hopefully someone experienced on an engine swap. Fair question to ask the service manager. I think I would also at least ask about trading it. You are in a strong position to negotiate not getting ripped off on a new one.

I had my engine replaced and it sold for exactly what it would have sold for without the swap. You’re being slightly dramatic because the new engine will have its own warranty. That’s a bonus, not a negative.

That's OK then.

Somehow I missed this thread originally but sign me up if Ram is giving away engines after I've run mine for X years already.

It's a non issue, and I agree with those who already said it's a bonus. Replacing an engine isn't rocket science if you have the tools and have done it already a few times and you're a qualified mechanic with training and official Ram techs and specs on the other end of the phone. Many guys do this in their garage on their own.

I sold my '17 challenger back to an FCA dealer with 12K miles on the clock and 2K of that being on a new long block (replacement after it windowed #8). I got a hell of a deal from them and had I known I was going to trade the 1500 on a 2500 I would've really cleaned up (I was hoping the wife would drive my paid off 1500, but she parks her little edge like its an F450 so I prolly got lucky there). Having a mopar installed long block actually got me more than I would've expected (dealer even mentioned it which is odd for them to consider factors besides what a sales guy can push on a buy back not a trade in). Prolly didn't hurt I let them buy it at the peak of the shortages.

Yes..

No the dealership won't be expected to swap an entire truck, besides do to want someone else's truck that you don't know anything about?
The dealership is replacing the Cummins with a new motor which will likely have the CP3 based HPFP. Now if they were trying to do a short block that would not be acceptable.
It's a Cummins truck, they're won't be any problems with resale, also keep the records of why the engine was swapped.
See, that right there, is why your are a Mod.

Succient, nice and efficient.

I’d keep an eye on the clock. In NY at least, if they have your truck too long, you may be able to force them to buy it back.

Another one post wonder. Comes here to complain, doesn't get the response they want and is never heard from again.

Perhaps there is a way to automatically delete threads for folks that have 1 post and don't return in say 30 days. Most of these threads have very little usable content and members waste their time trying to help.

Mental note, carry a wrench set with me when going to the dealer for oil changes. These people just can never get it right. It's not that hard. I'm a shadetree mechanic and know how many engines I've seized? Zero. They either torque the drain plug to 1209483906739872652 ft/lb or barely hand tight.
Before I ever leave a service for my rigs, I always check under, and also check the oil on the dipstick or any level if serviced / touched. Likely would not have helped in this situation but it does make me feel better.

I’m with you - hard to imagine not getting an oil change managed correctly but it happens far too much.

Yes, first time they use a 1/2 inch impact wrench on the plug, second time they just hand tight it, go for a smoke break, then come back and totally forget about it.
I, as a mechanic, know, any plug has two states: off, or properly tight.

I'm most impressed that the shop admitted fault and is replacing the engine without giving the owner tons of grief and misery.
