THIS IS my 2000 D2500 DIESEL TR.
OK I've replaced both Power Steering Hoses ... Still had leak .. One of the hoses was leaking for sure.
A FEW MONTHS later I'm out of fluid again .CHECKED IT OUT & Mechanic said it's the Power Steering Gear Box leaking . But back when this started that gear box was $600.00. So I filled it up several times .
But I needed to take it on our annual Deer Hunting trip out to the ranch in New Mexico a 590 mile trip one way. . SO I took it back into the shop & told him to call down to the parts house & get the gear box & put it on for me .
They call back & Say It's not the gear box leaking but the Power Steering pump.
GREAT NEWS AS IT'S CHEAPER MUCH CHEAPER . SO the shop puts on the Power steering pump . 2 or 3 months later It's leaking again .. & SOMETHING CAME UP & WE DIDN'T GET TO GO HUNTING.
... BUT Now I'm having to add fluid again . & I believe it's the gear Box again.
BUT GOOD NEWS IS the price of the gear box has dropped now . Only $127.50 YEA. I certainly don't mind putting on new parts on this truck as I plan to keep it forever.
BUT is there any other part that could be leaking P/S Fluid .
..................
........OTHER than one of the parts I've already replaced .
I plan to keep my old truck until my demise .& It has 365K On it now but I don't put but about 8 to 10 k a year on it now that I'm 72.................
........Thanks in advance .

steering is pretty much a closed system. if your pump is new and not leaking and your gear is new and not leaking, it's most likely the fitting or return hose clamp. make sure the pressure hose seated squarely and then torqued correctly. the return should be simple hose clamps at the pump.

I always trace the leaks back to the problem.

If it's all grimey, you'll have to wipe it all down first, and monitor over next few short drives.

GEAR BOX IS NOT NEW YET. but I've replaced both Hoses . & It has a new PUMP.
Isn't that all the parts there are involved, unless one of my new parts is bad!

My 2001 1500 Ram has a power steering fluid leak.
a mechanic told me they are notorious for this.
worried about the pump, how long can it run dry or low before it goes bad?

Well HERE WE ARE at 01-25-23 & again I'm telling you something is leaking in my P/S system. I'm putting in fluid about once each 3 months.
& Now I believe I've got or had new P/S PUMP. P/S GEAR BOX, BOTH P/S hoses. I only use the genuine P/S Fluid . & the return hose.
Is there any more parts in this system.
Is it time to start over & start replacing each part over again.

Something is leaking. Put a clean sheet of something (cardboard?) under the truck right when you park it. Check it in a couple hours. If nothing, try running it and cycling the steering. Keep watch on the drip sheet.

New parts don't always stop leaks. Especially reman parts - some cores should never have made the cut, and can't trust the reassembly process.

Yes your correct on that statement. & i'M Not in the parts business any longer . But Ito have 1972 Bronco with a 4 BT Cummins in it.
.... I'll bet I've put 5 Master cylinders on it & I just added more fluid today. AGAIN. About every 4 to6 weeks.
Since it's a diesel ... Where would you suggest I look for an oil leak.
All I can say is it's on the front disk because the back bowl on the M/C is empty every time. I see no leaks .

Diesel or gas won't matter where the master cyl leaks. The fluid is going somewhere, and randomly throwing parts at it is hard way to solve anything.

I have two master cylinders now (on trucks) that leak intermittently. It's the reservoir cover. Every so often, after a good long drive, the whole outside of the MC is wet and the fwd reservoir is low.

I don't get too excited if things keep working. Top off fluids and keep on going.

Yes , I dont think topping off the fluid is a disaster . But I can't believe how many I've had leak.
.... Back when I had my auto store . I had sheets of sand paper kept just to check the surface on the top od the cylinder. We'd turn the M/C Upside down on the Sand paper & scoot it back & fourth & make sure it didn't have a dent in the top rail.
So of mine I've bought new top gaskets .. Just can't believe how many I've had .
