Could be, but unless someone actually does a voa of both, we can't be sure that it is the exact same thing. There might be differences. Pretty sure there are. Do you guys have Shell Helix in the U.S.?

No, it's a European brand.

About Shell Helix 0w40 oil: " For gasoline, diesel and gas engines; also suitable for biodiesel and gasoline/ethanol blends." If its suitable for use in a diesel engine it sure as heck should hold up well in your engine...

I will put it on the list of oils for my usage and test. I wonder how many times do you need to use an oil in order to get a proper educated result on what it is doing to your engine..
Right now I'm using Castrol Magnatec Start Stop and I will be moving on to straight Magnatec 10W40 and 10w30.
I also wanted to try Castrol Edge, Toyota's own brand oil and HPL.
I'm done with Amsoil. As far as I can tell, it did nothing to prevent the engine tick from happening and if ever anyone needs to use anything for the lifter tick, it should either be Redline 5w30 or 5w40. If Redline is not available, then from what I can tell HPL should be your next best bet or Castrol Magnatec 10W40.

Pretty dang shocking when you consider the history of this trucks tick. I would wonder if all of that redline had a more semi permanent moly plate, but for the fact that your tick did come back at the end of your amsoil 0w40 run. Which means it is more likely moly needs to be present to repopulate the moly plate in use. However, I would have never guessed this would work, looking forward to the entire story and uoa which my guess is you will be doing. Thanks brother for update. Makes one also wonder if the moly is working so good, why did the tick come back on the 0w40 run. More questions are popping up then answers if these results hold true for an oci. For the record this is 0w20 valvoline yes.

Makes one wonder if you were to dump some lube guard in there once you started hearing the tick and see if it would go away at the end of the interval. If the moly is the answer it should in theory work if all you’re doing is replacing it. Maybe I’m off with my thinking?

Perhaps a true test would be pennzoil platinum 5w20. The oil that started his tick iirc?

Yeah so I will never put PP 5w20 in my truck again, it sounded SO bad on it. Wish I had got a video of it.

Well thats not true, I might lube the door hinges with it lol

That looks like its a cam hardening issue, lobs are delaminating and taking out the lifters one by one, most of the lobes/lifters showing varying levels of carnage.

Interesting. Pretty sure in the hemi its the lifter that fails, and other lifters can be in perfect condition yet ever after 150+k miles.

That engine calls for 5w-30 too, so it's not like it's a viscosity issue.

The more time I spend on other forums, the more I appreciate my truck every day.

Holy moly! This after they had the Triton engines figured out at last. The V10 6.8L Triton was a beast, but sucked gas like a pig, of course. We used these at work for gaseous fuel generator engines (small stuff for us), and the boy had a truck with one.

HTF can you not know how to harden a cam in the 21st century? The GM induction hardening debacle was 40 years ago!!!

Thanks for the headsup!

A couple questions.

Its been a while since Ive even needed to look at oil (private stash is dwindling :) ). My truck is not driven much, maybe 6K miles per year. 99% of the time is short trips, so Ive always been using full synth, but not necessarily a boutique synth (like RL). Currently running Shell Rotella Gas Truck 5W-30...the engine seems to like it, its a bit loud but not nearly as bad as PUP 5W-30 was.

Rotella GT seems to have disappeared from my area, no idea why. Because of that, what would a decent off-the-shelf oil be? I saw Castrol (gold bottle) mentioned...*that* I can get, along with pretty much any variety of Mobil 1. Not averse to changing viscosity, within reason.

Second question - I had 2 RP filters hanging around in my oil cabinet. Checked them just to check them and noticed there is a bit of rust at the "seam" of the top of the can (thread end). Pics attached. Also note, one has flat holes and the other has "scalloped" holes. These have been sitting in my cabinet for a bit, but curious if they are still usable.

Thanks in advance.

-Chris

Me personally I would not use. Especially that they are in stock again. Just $15 for a peace of mind, yeah worth it.

To be honest Ive been using Fram Ultra only because they were even more available near me (Walmarts all over the place, Pep Boys not so much)
