So I’m not comfortable sharing photos as of yet, but I was involved in a sort of serious crash. My 2010 1500 trx4 is set up as my personal response vehicle for working with the county rural fire department. I’ve posted photos before that people can find if interested. I was responding to a tractor trailer roll over between where I live and the main town in the county, cruising at 75-80 mph with my emergency lights on and occasional siren sounded before each main crossing of the highway. A RV pulled out infront of me and the Type six fire engine right behind me. They had someone stopped infront to them who could see and hear us coming but the rv decided to go arround them and try and get across infront of us. I hit the brakes and ended up on my side in the ditch pretty hard, and the engine flipped a few hundred feet past me half on the road. I got away mostly fine considering what happened. The type six engine was totaled with one of our guys having to be life flighted to Seattle’s level one trauma center and another going to Boise’s trauma center.

Please people for the love of god don’t try and get ahead of or cut infront of emergency vehicles. It almost cost four young volunteer firefighters their lives, cost me my only way of getting into town during the winter, and delayed response to the initial accident because resources had to respond to our wrecks.

That sucks to hear some first responders were injured due to someone's ignorance, good to hear escaped unharmed for the most part. I see people all the time ignoring emergency vehicles lights/sirens in the city. I was riding along in one of the big class 6 ambulances enroute to the hospital an it's an eye opener how many people don't move out of the way, the ambulance was full lights, sirens and laying on the air horns.

But yeah. Looks like I’m going to be shopping for a new ram probably because I’m ninety percent sure insurance is going to write off my truck.

It's frustrating for sure that so many people think that whatever they are doing is more important than what someone else (especially emergency vehicles) are doing. Sad thing is, I think lots of young people have come to believe that their needs are more important than anyone elses.

SUCKS
Hope the RV driver got a ticket.
When I was a Vol.Firefighter many many years we were allowed to run calls P O V (personally Owned vehicles) with red light in dash, well one call I had someone infront of me I guessed she panicked and dead stopped in front of me.
Nothing happened BUT after that call when I got back home I took red light off my dash and never used it again,
AND YES I wa obeying the speed limit and traffic laws.

this is why i sort of do not agree with personal veh being allowed to used lights and siren.. It makes it very confusing for a person when they are used to seeing a emergency veh in its colors..

Glad everyone made it out of the accident..

Sorry to hear about your crash. Just my .02 but I think a lawyer would tell you you have shared too much already. I would delete this thread as well as any other social media posts until after my case -as well as your injured coworkers- was settled with the other party’s insurance.

Lights are lights. It's a crime to use certain light colors unless you're on the way to a call.

Not sure about laws in Idaho, but in Oregon that moron w/ the RV would be facing an ugly bout of jail-time and a revoked license at the very least. They have a lot of laws involving interference w/ emergency vehicles

Kinda agree here, though a deletion may not be necessary, I'd get legal advice either way, and only stick to the facts.

Betting the insurance company is going to want to know where that dude is...

If you ever come over to the states in the Detroit area be prepared for unmarked, minimal marked and hide-in-plain-sight emergency vehicles. They tend to blend in very well but take a keen eye to realize they're not a regular Joe on the road.
The minimal marked vehicles have logos just on the passenger side and usually use lettering that's sorta blends in at the first glance.
The hide-in-plain-sight vehicles are non-typical emergency vehicles (some are Mustangs, Camaros, pickup trucks, etc) and some even painted in construction vehicle orange (only they have a red light on top not yellow).
That's why there are laws that only emergency response vehicles are allowed to use flashing red and blue lights.

Wow, glad you are ok. I hope the others will recover. If yours was rolled and given its age, it sounds like you'll be looking for another truck. But of course insurance pay-out on a 2010 won't completely cover the cost of a newer pickup.

It never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many lights or how bright, people ram into cop cars and emergency vehicles at a frustratingly high rate. Like moths to a bright light. Did they arrest/cite the driver?

It burns me when driving along and seeing an emergency vehicle coming up. I pull over and then knuckleheads behind me. Keep going to get in front and end up confusing the emergency vehicle driver. Due to budgetary issues or other decisions made personal vehicles do get used as emergency response vehicles, that's just the way it is and while it can get confusing, the bottom line is that if there are flashing lights of the color of emergency vehicles, the prudent thing to do is just slow down and or pull over and let them go by. That's what we would hope others would do if we were in an accident.

Hope that recovery for all is quick and that the person at fault makes a huge donation to help replace the lost equipment.

Yeah in idaho, especially up here in the panhandle, you’ll see a lot of emergency vehicles that are pickups. Most sheriffs departments use em, as do the forest service and the few big cities fire departments. Here even a volunteers personal rig can run flashing red and whites when responding to a call. Was a bright red and grey truck with two seven foot antennas off the back of the headache rack and flashers in the grill and on the rack.

This was thirty two days ago and there’s a decent bit more info that I can’t say for now. I’ve said the same info as said by one of the others since it’s the only “factual” info so far, though his account is from the Engine’s perspective. I’ve avoided saying anything til now because of the reasons you said, didn’t want to muddy the waters with insurance. But at this point I really don’t care. What I do care about right now is that there is a teachable moment for someone, as well as finding a new truck.

Don't matter...I'm just happy to hear you didn't total your ass. The truck can be replaced. You can't. Keep us updated on your partners.
For the most part good news on their sides, with our guy who was flown to Boise being back up here to finish physical therapy. Sounded like he plans to quit last I talked with him, which I don’t blame him. The guy flown to seattle is staying out there for a while but isn’t dead yet as he keeps telling me. He’s made it clear he’s probably done with the dept after this.
