My 22' Cummins is one of those that does not have a fuel filler cap. Now it does have a little plastic cap that just snaps on the filler tube but says "shipping use only" "remove". At first I thought I would leave that on there for just a little more protection from getting road grit down in the tank. But then I thought maybe it needs to be open for a vacuum or a vent for the tank. Probably just leave it off huh?

I know the caps are made for the earlier models, perhaps it will fit yours.

I have two gas vehicles with the cap less systems. One a 2015 and one a 2014, no fuel related issues with either. The cap less systems work and have been around for over a decade.

I ran the aluminum cap from Geno's for 68K miles with no issues. I always keep the fill area clean, and despite the double flapper and all that jazz I think the capless fill is dumb, especially around here where there are lots of dirt roads.

Buy some after market anodized aluminum caps with o rings. . The fuel one is green and marked "Diesel." The DEF cap is blue and threaded and clearly marked also. A definite improvement from a factory over sight. It gives me some confidence when a station attendant in Oregon or someplace that requires someone else to pump your fuel.

the designers of the capless system live in gated communities where they must not allow children.

Where i live, there are several 7 - 11 year olds, that love to play in sand. There are little piles of sand on tree stumps, vehicle bumpers, on door sills & stairways.

Yeah our 2014 Durango is cap less & we have not had any issues so I am not super worried about it. I just thought maybe this little plastic snap on cap might cause more problems than good.

To answer your specific question...no, it won't hurt anything to keep the plastic cap on there.

Even in Oregon it does not stop the idiots from trying to put \Gas into a Diesel tank, I know as it just happened again 3 days ago, it's another reason why I bought the below locking caps for my 22....

I have large hands & arthritis
so if those caps unscrew, it would become a chore to get the caps off & on

Take a look at the photos on Genos web site to see how they work for the ECO Diesel, IMO they are very easy to use, I think the second URL is the cap for your truck then click on the fourth photo: https://www.genosgarage.com/category/fuel-caps : https://www.genosgarage.com/product/ram-locking-fuel-cap-gg-ezlc1/fuel-caps

For the 2019 - 2023 Ram Cummins, these "Geno's Garage" fuel & DEF locks are pricey but excellent. If there's one thing you don't want is vandalism--someone maliciously putting something in your tanks, so I got these very soon after I bought my 2019 dually.

FUEL cap:

DEF cap.

Each comes with two keys, that work on both the fuel and DEF, so if you get both, you'll have plenty of spare keys.

Although these aluminum caps were labeled for 2013-2017 - it fit perfectly on my 2020. $7 and has a magnet to hold it to the filler door while fueling so I don't leave it on the bed rail or pump. The o ring holds it securely in place, but easy to remove. The link is no longer valid, so I uploaded an image. It does not have the locking mechanism like Geno's, but it keeps out all the dust. When I took delivery of my vehicle, it has a thick coating of sand and dirt inside the fuel door. I recognize it is *in theory* not going to make it into the tank. However, I wanted to minimize the amount of crap falling down the fill tube when offroading or working in the dust.

I use a rubber plumbing cap to keep dirt out of capless fillers. Dumbest idea ever. Invented by people who don’t know what dirt roads are.
Good idea, I refuse to spend $50 (38 + ship/tax) to remedy yet another financial cop-out by the truck/car mgfs. How long will it be till the spare is gone like a lot of cars?

I leave my 2019 red plastic cap in and have not had any issues for past 3 years.

You can get caps with and without locks from Geno’s Garage. I got mine from them they work great keeps dirt and debris from getting in there and preventing thieves from attempting to steal your fuel.
