If you don't take the battery out of the FOB and park the truck for a week you will have a flat battery, especially in this area where it is cold. The live FOB does not allow the truck to go to sleep properly and draws enough power to make the truck not start. It also means that if someone breaks into the truck and hits the start button, truck will fire right up.

P.S. Should have read all the way to the end, I see GT already posted this. Oh well, twice said is better than not said.

I don't have the start button type. Does that make a difference?

Do you have proximity entry. If no start button and no proximity entry I would think the FOB would have no effect. Easy enough to check, take a voltage reading on the battery after it is parked a week. Then run truck to fully charge battery, take the FOB away and check after another week.

I actually figured out the voltage drop on mine, push button and proximity entry, by accident. I had a FOB in the truck over hunting season, and a door key in a magnetic case outside, just in case we lost a FOB or someone got back to the truck early. It was -30 when we were hunting so no fun sitting in a cold truck.

I never took the FOB out after hunting season, went to start the truck about 3 weeks later, barely started and it was parked inside. Took a bit of dicking around but finally noticed that even when my main FOB was in the house, the dash was lighting up regularly. So I measured the AMP drain with a meter and sure enough, every time it woke up, it dragged a fair amount of power. Put the glove box FOB in the house, no more waking up.

Thanks - no proximity entry.

Zoe, did you know that the FOB you leave in or under the vehicle while your away from it, is constantly pinging the Rams Body Control Module ?
This could allow 2 things to happen
1) it could drain your battery, because the Pinging is Communicating
2) if you happen to be in an area where thieves are using that electronic device that catches signals, they could unlock your vehicle.

I could see leaving the FOB where it currently is, but i would remove the FOBs battery from the FOB
but i live in a large town, in the San Diego out skirts
I keep a spare FOB hidden in my 2016 Eco cab. Have since 2016. The truck has been left locked for 32 days at a time. I've never experienced what you describe. Is it because mine is a put the FOB in the ignition to start, it is not a push button start or ??

Would the answer be to put the FOB in a Faraday pouch if you want to leave it in the truck? I have a spare FOB in a Faraday pouch hidden in my 2020 3500 push-button start and have not had any problems. And that truck sits locked up for 5-9 months at a time.

Faraday works as does just taking the battery out and taping it to the outside of the FOB where it is handy.

A few months ago ,I got a couple of those cases, when the fob is in it you can't start the truck or open the doors.
Some one also mentioned turning off the fob, I wrote it on a note
" Hold lock down, push unlock 2 times " I have not tried it , that would save taking the battery out

Good tip - Didn't know that - Thanks
I assume you turn it back on by just operating it.

John, i think that you are correct, our 2016 Rams, where you have to insert the FOB into the ignition, do not ping the BCM & keep the computer awake.

I have not found any Faraday pouches or cages, but i have not really looked

I live close enough to the road, that i want a Faraday device to keep some spare FOBs in 24/7

I live on the edge of town, where a fancy vehicle, even a new Laramie is not likely to be found, 6 short blocks away, you might step in horse manure going to a 7/11 store or Mexican eatery

The Faraday pouch works great, just remember to manually lock your doors when in public.

SNLT.com sells faraday bags, pouches, and more. I have 4 and keep my keys in them when not driving.

John Jensen, i am pretty familiar with the area
I worked for CalTrans from 1970 - 2003
I worked around San Diego from 1975 - 2003
I have run a Street Sweeper, cleaned almost every drain, repaired roads, etc. on all the State Highways, from the Border to San Clemente & over to the Truck Scales on I-15 at Temecula.
From the Ocean out to Delsura , Descanso , Ramona & out to the Pauma & Pala casinos.
I used to vacuum out the drains on the Coronado Bay Bridge
I believe that i have walked almost every foot of it too :)

Im a new member I have a 2024 ram 3500 with a key problem. My wife left her purse in the truck with her fob inside. She got out and locked the doors with the button on the outside of the door handle and the mirrors folded. If anyone happens to push the unlock button, the doors will unlock and then pushing the start button, they can drive away. I know, don’t leave purse inside but even the fob in a tray or jacket makes it insecure. I can’t find out how to program to prevent this. Thanks for response.

There not in the truck. It won't lock with a fob inside.
Not true I always have a spare key hidden someplace, And I have always ben able to lock my vehicle. DO you have U-Connect call them an give them your security key they can unlock your vehicle for you. From anywhere.

I see this also but I also have never read this thread and yet it has useful advice… that is probably why members can post to old threads.

Thank you for resurfacing this thread “
