I have the ability or the bad luck depending on how you look at it to brake the most random things on my truck. This time I broke the the winch of the spare tire holder under the bed. luckily I had a cable lock around my spare so it didn't fall out. Now I want to make a spare tire mount in the bed. I want to mount the tire flat against the box against the back window. my concern is the bed is pretty thin sheet metal. So I need some ideas on how to mount it. since I am running 35's on method rims its a pretty heavy tire and I am not done romping my truck through the desert so it needs to be a fairly stout mount. my 2 ideas are get 2 sheets of steel use one as back plate and mount the tire to the other and sandwich the 2 plates to the bed. or run to pieces of steel on the bed rails and weld a beam between them.
What are your thoughts?

Years ago my uncle had a F100 with the spare mounted in the box, and every time we needed to haul something in the truck that dang spare had to be jockeyed around in the bed or was just left in the machine shed. If it were my truck I’d hit a junkyard and snag a good used winch assembly, then keep it properly cleaned and lubed. But, that’s just me…

best,
DG

i am sure these are all good products and thank you for your responses. But i feel you yall have missed the core of my post. i am not looking to buy a product, I am going to be making it myself. though these products have given me some design Ideas. Also none of these ideas address my concern with mounting a heavy object to thin sheet metal. My truck is no pavement princess. I need a tire mount that can handle every bit of abuse that comes with off-roading and then some.

That's why I shared that link, if @ram1500rsm hasn't broken his off with his King abusing desert runs, it's probably up to the task. I think he welded his where the adjustment bolts are once he got it sized up.

my post was just to give you ideas, not for you to purchase

I bought some Flat Stock metal & 2" X 3" metal tube to mount these toolboxes.
The flat stock went under the bed
The 2X3s were used on the floor of the bed, the tool boxes were mounted on top of the 2 X 3s. ( that raised the tool boxes, so the trucks bed could cleaned )

The flat stock & 2x3s sandwiched the bed floor

you could use aluminum box tube
I used steel, not thinking about rust

When I have done it I run a vertical strut from the bed side rail down to the bed floor then use an angle bracket to bolt through the floor. Bolt the upright through the side profile of the bed rail, on the inside. Then when you snug a tire to it it pulls the vertical strut, bed rail, and tire all together. Never gonna move.

The top of the bed front is a lot weaker than side rails. If you put the load there add significant bracing across the top. One good impact and it’ll kink.

Something did in my cargo trailer was run E-track on the wall and used a mounting adapter for holding tires. It’s just a track attachment with a long threaded bolt. You could use a track section to reinforce the bed front and provide miscellaneous attachment points.

That's correct i have the spare in that location for daily driving and some ocassional offroad but not for the long fun desert runs. see post #1190 and 1191 here

I don't feel the one carriage bolt been the only thing that puts pressure on the tire against the mount will hold that type of abuse even though i have the bracket bolted with a bolt/nut at the top of the bracket, the bottom of the bracket wouldn't hold just with the self tapping screw so i had it welded (more tacked than welded in case i need to remove it all together in the future at the top, middle and bottom of the bracket and against the truck bed). When doing desert runs i will simple switch the spare down to the bed and strap it down with my ny NFAB Rapid strap. Lot better spare support and even with the 37 KO2's back there it never moved never complained :), see post#41 and #42 here.
